Milk allergy questions

DW and I are looking into whether DD has a milk allergy or not.  We were told by a few people that her persistent diaper rashes may be a milk allergy.  But after speaking to the nurse at the pedis office yesterday, she seems to think that she'd have other signs.  She does get off and on loose poop, but that's it.  Anyway, nothing gets rid of these rashes besides using a high dosage of steroid cream off and on.  Does anyone have a LO with a milk allergy or an allergy in general that only presents itself in a diaper rash?  I am stumped here!
Note: we usually cloth diaper, but the rashes started with that.  So I stripped the diapers and it persisted.  Then we switched to disposables.  Pampers were worst, followed by Walmart brand, then Huggies, then Target, now we're trying Luvs.  I think it's safe to say that it's our kid and not the diapers.
Note2: We tried a couple of weeks without milk and replaced it with almond milk.  But at the same time she was on that steroid cream.  Then when the rash cleared up we went back to cow's milk.  I dunno if we should switch to almond milk to try and clear it up, or use the steroid to try and clear it up then try the almond milk?

Re: Milk allergy questions

  • We were having persistent diaper rash until we switched him to Lactaid. Like you I cloth diaper and tried stripping the diapers, I tired using disposables and what finally made a difference was switching to the lactaid.

  • Stella had a milk allergy but thankfully she outgrew it.  Before she outgrew it she had a pretty horrid reaction, especially during the early months.  She had a rash on her face, diaper rash, diarrhea, and bloody mucus in her poop.  It didn't matter how small of an amount she had, she had a reaction.  That being said, a diaper rash was always the first thing to show up any time she as accidentally exposed to it.

I'd try giving LO almond milk or another substitute until everything is all cleared up.  Eliminate all other dairy, including hidden dairy, for a few weeks or so. Then gradually reintroduce it in small amounts and test out her reaction.

On a side note, it's possible that her occasional loose poops and rash are the result of different foods.  Anything even mildly spicy will destroy LO's system, as I found out once while BFing after a lunch at Chipotle's.  Spaghetti or any other type of red sauce will do it too.
