Advice on feeding please!!!

I have a 8 week old who was sleeping from about 1030-11 until 530, recently he started needing to eat more during the day so we increased his formula to 5 oz every 3-4 hrs (normally 3-3.5) and his last bottle was right before bedtime. For the past three four nights he has been waking earlier and earlier and was hungry, he's now only sleeping about 3-4 hrs at a time. If he's going through a growth spurt should I up his feedings throughout the day by a half oz or so or cluster feed at night and give him maybe 3-4 extra oz between his last two feedings in the evening? Any advice is appreciated!

I have never understood a question like this. If he's hungry in the day, feed him. If he's finishing 5 oz in the day and wants more, yes feed more. But to "up his feedings to 5.5 oz in the day", how on earth do you do this? If you make 5.5 or 6 oz bottles, and he eats them, yes do that. But if you make 5.5 or 6 oz bottles and he still only takes 5 oz (like usual) how do you get him to eat the rest???

For us, we always make bottles bigger than our LO finishes. For example, right now (6w) he eats 3-3.75 oz, so our bottles are 4 oz bottles. Once he starts eating the entire 4 oz bottle for a day, we'll start making 5 oz bottles. But if I began making 5 oz bottles now, the only thing that would do is make me waste 1-1.5 oz every feeding.

  • I take it you are FF. I would feed whenever your baby is hungry. There is no need to time or measure how much they eat unless they are underweight. (And you bottle feed). I would add more to the bottles and see how it goes. If a half an oz is not enough, give more. :) Just feed when hungry. Your baby knows what it needs at this point.

Sometimes I feel like my LO is a bottomless pit!!
  • Feed him until he doesn't want anymore. My girl isn't FF, but she will nurse for an hour and a half before bed during growth spurts. I used to stop her but it made her unhappy. At this age, I think it's important to let them do what they want to do in regards to eating. :)
