Rant/Dear Diary: Cluster Feeding

Sorry about another cluster feeding rant, but I am starting to go a little crazy tonight so I need to vent for a second. Lyla is definitely in the 7-10 day growth spurt window. She has been feeding almost non-stop since about 10pm and it is now 3am. Gah! My nipples are raw! No matter how much lanolin I put on them it doesn't get a chance to work because she is switching from breast to breast almost every half hour (with short breaks in between). They hurt so bad, every time she latches I want to cry (once she gets going its fine, it's just the initial latch that hurts so much). In between nursing she is wide awake having a party! She did this last night too and most of today, well yesterday at this point. I have only managed to sleep for about 30minutes so far tonight and that is coming off of only managing between 5 and 6 broken up hours of sleep last night. I have officially joined the club. Thanks for joining my little MOTN pity party! I hope you all sleep well. :)

Re: Rant/Dear Diary: Cluster Feeding

  • Ew, that sounds difficult! I hope that schedule doesn't keep up for long. You need rest! We are up every two hours for about an hour each time. My nipples are sore about every other day. Making sure their mouth is wide open, and that they are at the right level will make sucking milk more efficient and nipples less sore. GL!

  • I had the same problem with the sore nipples the first week and it was quite painful. I went to see our LC and she had me make some slight adjustments such as making sure the nipple went it towards the roof of her mouth and in the center (not at an angle). After those small adjustments I was healed in a few days and no more pain. Be sure to keep hydrated, especially during these cluster feeds and hopefully this phase will pass soon!

You are at the worst part and everything will get better from here on out for nursing. Hang in there!

I got some soothing gel pads from Lanisoh that helped with the cluster feeding stage.
IVF, acupuncture, meditation and a miracle.

  • a warm towel right before they latch has helped me tremendously with the initial pain at latch. GL!

  • I just went through it, it DOes get better, there is a light at the end of the tunnel..and when it does your LO will sleep like never before so just wait it out!! Any chance your babe will take a paci for a while and your SO can hold/rock while you sneak a nap in?
  • I'm still waiting for my pump to come in. And it's finally over! She has been sleeping in 3-4 hour chunks since mid day yesterday. I slept wonderfully last night because of that! <:-P
