Crib transition crap

Anyone else's LO have a few crap nights of sleep after being transitioned into the crib?

I know this is a boring post. I googled without much luck.

Hoping there were some A13 mommies who had some advice or could at least commiserate.

Thanks ladies.

Ps. Wondering if we should have a weekly sleep issues post to amalgamate all these types of questions?

  • Same here. I have really good intentions to move her to the crib but she is sleeping so well in her swing I don't wanna mess that up!! Ugh. I think my first step would be to move the swing to her room. But I like having her close by! I will be watching for advice though :)

  • Yup...haven't used the crib a whole lot. We attempt naps in the crib...doesn't usually go well. We transitioned her to the pack n play about a week ago for bed time...which is working out much better than the rock n play. Once she's sleeping 7+ hr stretches consistently, then we'll trans to the crib. I know this is of no help, but GL!
  • We've been trying to get DD to sleep in hers more but it's not working out too good. She's ok for a couple of hours but then she's up again. Sleepy, but would rather sleep in my arms so the moment I lay her in the crib she's awake again. Good question OP, I'll be watching for responses & advice as well.
  • We transitioned DS to his crib within the last week or so. He was previously in his RNP in his room. We also tried it about a month ago without any success. This time around I bought a crib wedge and DS has done pretty well with the transition. I also think he was ready for it this time as he seemed to be wanting to spread out more and his rnp wouldn't let him.

I also used the advice I found on link below and the transition has been pretty good. Good luck!!

  • Heck, I am just trying to ween her from her swaddler at night. After that then we will try to transition from crib to the swing. Even getting her to not be swaddled is rough, so I am not looking forward to the crib

  • The big transition starts Friday so I'll be watching this post. Dd is swaddled in her swing at the moment. Sh hasn't started rolling yet, so we want her to be used to her crib before she loses the swaddle. Baby steps. I'm so not looking forward to it. I cried over it last night.

  • Haven't tried the crib yet so I don't have any advice but I do think the weekly sleep post is a great idea!

  • I transitioned to the crib at about 8 weeks, cold turkey. It took about a week for her to get used to it. The biggest thing that helps I think is that I put a heating pad on low to warm her spot so it's not cold when I put her down. Remove it from the crib before putting baby in obvi. I also put my used pillow case under her crib sheet. You'll have a few tough nights but if you can persevere you'll all sleep better! Good luck!

Thank you for this. It's so encouraging to know there's an end in sight. The last two nights she's been getting up so often I've lost count. She was a good sleeper before so I'm just hoping she returns to that way. :)
  • Well I will update you all as I continue with the transition if that would be helpful. I'm going to stick it out and just hope it doesn't last much longer. She's still swaddled. Like a pp mentioned, I want her sleeping well in the crib before we take her swaddle away. We shall see! Thanks for the responses peeps!
  • We transitioned from the PNP napper attachment (in our room) to the crib (in the nursery) when LO was about 8 weeks old (she's 16 weeks today). She did fantastic from night 1, so I think she was just ready. I think she likes spreading out more (she has never been swaddled because she hated it) and wasn't being woken up by any movements by DH, me, or the dog.

The first night, we had her sleep in the PNP in our room for her first stretch and then put her in the crib after her first MOTN feeding because she goes down much easier at that time. She did so well that the second night, we put her down in her crib from the start.

I was nervous about not having he in our room, but it has been wonderful for all of us - everyone sleeps better, and I don't mind getting up and going to the nursery to feed her since she usually only wakes once in the MOTN, and the nursery is next to our room. The video monitor is also my best friend - I often wake up and check on her but don't have to worry about waking her. GL!

  • We're working on transitioning him the crib for naps right now.  For some reason he does better when MH puts him down versus when I do.  He had a few hour+ naps over the weekend, hoping that after another week we can start to transition him at night.

    My baby is ONE!!

  • We've had a rough go of it. Started about two weeks ago (but also traveled for five nights of that). Its been harder to get him down at night and he wakes up frequently. I dont mind going in to nurse him but it seems like after three times or so I usually bring him back into bed with us. We weren't bed sharing before, but since his 4 month shots we started. So while we're one step forward with starting in the crib, we're also two steps back perse because he's now in our bed instead of just in our room.

I did just get a noisemaker and that seems to help. We are still swaddling. He's rolled over once so I've been nervous about it but we haven't replicated the roll over yet  I put him down when he's sound asleep. Overtime I hope to remove the swaddle and then also put to sleep while drowsy. All baby steps.

  • We just bought the magic sleep suit. I wanted to transition him out of the swaddle into the sleep suit before we moved him into his crib, but he had a massive growth spurt and he is now as long as his bassinet. He sleeps stretches out so his head and feet touch the ends of it. Now we have to transition him to his crib before we were planning. I am going to start this weekend so DH can help in the morning if I have not slept all night.

We put him in the crib for the first time on Saturday, and he seemed to do very well. We were in a weird situation where he couldn't be in the crib til now, (renovations, moving, not living at home). He started out co-sleeping until almost 2 months, then the pnp, now the crib. He's still swaddled at night but not during the day.

On another note, for those who do crib sleep, do you find that your LO sweats a lot more? I'm wondering if it's because the mattress is made of the waterproof material?

  • I don't sleep well in new environments so it makes sense to me that a LO wouldn't either.

With DD1 I started with naps before trying nighttime. It took quite sometime, but she's always been sensitive.

I have not found that LO sweats more in the crib, but we keep the nursery between 68 and 72 degrees to make sure she doesn't overheat (she hates being hot).

We are just trying to make this transistion right now as well. I think we need to look into a wedge because I think LO wakes up because it's too roomy and flat.

Anyone have a wedge they bought over a different one?

    ETa: question

I just folded a big towel and put it under the mattress to give it a bit of an incline. It didn't work out as well as I wanted it to, DD is a very squirmy sleeper and would end up in the other end of the crib. I'm glad I didn't buy a wedge it would have been a waste of money!

We bought the Safe Lift Universal Crib Wedge Cushion from BabiesRUs and put it under her mattress. We're in the process of trying to transition her out of the swing and into the crib. With the wedge she's slept for a couple of hour naps so far. (Just started yesterday and still have her in the swing at night.

  • We tried on Saturday and it didn't go so well. DD was sleeping from between 8-9pm until 7am. On Saturday night we put her in the crib swaddled. She woke up at 1:30 completely unswaddled so we fed her and reswaddled. She woke up again at 5:30 completely unswaddled. We went out and bought the magic merlin suit and are going to try it again this weekend so if she doesn't sleep well we don't have to go to work the next day. We put her back in her RNP and she slept again from 8pm to 6am so hopefully it goes better this weekend.

She's been napping great in the crib. She requires her paci at the 45 min mark, and every 45 mins after, but she goes right back to sleep each time. 3 hour nap yesterday and currently just passed the 1.5 hr mark of this nap. So, it's not like she's uncomfortable in the crib or not used to it. I'm just wondering if it's time to try and paci-wean. I have no idea. Will give her a few more nights and see what's what. It's very obvious she uses the paci as a prop and can't put herself to sleep without it, but i'm not sure I'm ready to get rid of it yet....but as much as I enjoy my MOTN feeding with her - I can do with out the paci-shuffle every hour....
  • I've got DS taking naps in his crib on the regular, nervous about transitioning him to the crib because I don't have a lot of support if/when we all lose sleep because of it. But I'm gonna hafta suck it up soon because he's definitely outgrowing the co sleeper. Dreading the actual transition itself, but I know all will sleep better when it's done.

  • LO sleeps in bed with us. We've never had any problems. We ended up selling the crib because it ended up being a place to throw random crap into.

Joel has slept in the crib since about 3 weeks when co-sleeping wasn't working anymore. Instead of starting with naps and moving onto sleep, we only do night sleep in the crib and naps are elsewhere. I think it helped him learn the difference between night and day sleep better. After one week of transitioning, he STTN without issue in his crib as long as he went down with a full belly.

Now, at 3mo, he is a pro. We feed him, burp him, put him down in the crib awake but drowsy and within ten mins of snuggling with his lovie he's asleep. Then, if I'm still up I go take the lovie out of the crib just to be safe.

This is EXACTLY how it went for DD, only she doesn't eat a whole lot before bed, so she gets up once between 2 and 4 am. But she does naps in the swing, night in her crib.
