Officially on bedrest at 21 weeks for contractions

After 2 days of some nasty backaches, I decided to head to L&D for a checkup. After being hooked up to the monitors for what felt like forever, we found that I was actually having contractions every 6-8 minutes, sometimes longer. Fortunately, I had no cervical changes and the bags are still intact.

After IV fluids and my first dose of indocin, they sent me home on bedrest. I still have the constant back ache which scares me but feel overall fine.

Now I'm freaked out and panicking. I know this isn't the end, but I was so convinced that the pain was just back pressure from the growing babies. Who doesn't have back pain at this point, right???

I guess I'm just looking for some success stories or advice from others who have been here this early. How did you keep your mind occupied? How did you keep your hopes up?

Re: Officially on bedrest at 21 weeks for contractions

  • We can make friends!!! I'm on hospital bed rest as of yesterday. I'm 26 weeks 1 day with twins and went in with leaking to find out a water had broke. They are trying to prolong things but we are completely unsure how long that will be. I had a regular appointment on Friday and things looked relatively decent. Its a good thing that your cervix hasn't changed! Just be proactive with changes you notice!!! As a FTM I don't have any success stories but understand what you're going through! Hang in there!!!

  • So sorry girls, hang in there!

  • My contractions were first discovered (I didn't feel them) at 27 weeks.  I was in and out of the hospital, on modified bed rest when home, until I delivered the boys at 33 weeks.  Rest and relax as best you can.  Your body is doing an incredible amount of work.

  • I hope bedrest does the trick Figgs! So glad there is no cervical action, thats a really good sign!! My doc put me on modified bedrest for the same thing this weekend, but we think the contractions came from dehydration so doubling up on my water. So lots of rest and water for both of us. Ill be thinking of you, keep us updated!!! When I go on full bedrest next month, Im hoping to get an xbox set up in my room and lots of books. We can swap bedrest busying ideas!

I can totally understand where you're at. I was put on MBR before 25 weeks for complications including strong contractions every 5 minutes that caused cervical changes. I had started developing complications by the time I hit 16wks so it wasn't a complete surprise. Bed rest did the trick and we made it to 37 weeks with healthy babies and no NICU time. It was hard to adjust to (especially for my then 17 month old) and there were difficult days. I tried to keep my mind focused on how this was for the twins' sake and set lots of little goals...26wks, 28wks, 30wks, etc.

One thing my friends & coworkers did was set up an online "keep Kara company" board. They'd sign up for a slot to come keep me company for 2-3 hours every 3 days or so while DH was at work so I wasn't completely alone. Sometimes they'd bring food to share or would even just play with DD. It really helped to keep my spirits up since I couldn't go out of the house except to my doctor's and it gave me something to look forward to. Other than that I read a ton, crocheted, went Pinterest crazy (poor DH then had to make foods that I found and subsequently craved!), played games online, got active on forums, and tackled other projects that could be done from bed or the sofa. Feel free to PM me if you need other ideas or encouragement. Hang in there! :)

  • I went in to the hospital at 21 weeks for contractions and shortened cervix. I delivered at 25 weeks. That is really good news that your cervix is holding steady.

  • I was on bedrest at 20w and made it to week 35 thanks to bedrest & meds (and luck). My only advice is to be serious about the bedrest. I found every time I cheated things got a little bit worse. Don't beat  yourself up because a lot of this will be out of your control. But control what you can - drink a lot of water, eat a lot of protein or whatever they advise now for PTL, and lay down as much as you can. I was on bedrest for 15 straight weeks so I know it sucks so much, but it's worth it. GL!
