Croup/ vomiting/diahrea

DD is 20 months and the doctor said she had croup a week or so ago- he said the cough would last about 2-3 weeks which makes sense.  The first night she was so congested it sounded like she couldn’t breathe.   She got one dose of antibiotic and it really calmed her down and it’s subsided quite a bit.  She does cough when she is sleeping and now sounds a bit phlemy so I think it’s all coming out now.   She has had bouts of diarrhea off and on since it started, and just this morning I went in and she had thrown up sometime during the night and was covered.  Poor thing.   I feed her some toast this morning but when I left daycare she had thrown up again and had another loaded diaper.     MIL is watching her, tried to give some banana and she did the same thing.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Any tips or suggestions?  She has no fever at all and seems to be playing as normal.     I will refrain from dairy for sure.

  • Did the diarrhea start when she started her antibiotic?  Antibiotics can be very tough on their bellies.  Every time my DS has taken an antibiotic we have supplemented with a probiotic and it has helped immensely.  We use culturelle.

They usually don't give antibiotics for croup, they usually give a steroid.  DS had it 2 months ago.  He never had vomiting or diarrhea. Sounds like something more than croup.  They told me to get him to drink whatever he will take ie popsicles, water, juice, etc. The croup noise went away after about a week but he still coughed for another 2 weeks.  Just make sure it doesn't turn into pneumonia. GL!
  • Yes! It was a steroid not AB's you're right.

She still coughs but only a little. Maybe she cought a stomach bug as well.   She has been pretty picky lately with food and only wants cheese or yogurt-  maybe she just had too much dairy.  I don't know... i'll let it play out. No point on taking her in unless she has a fever.
