Games to play with LO

Hey, ladies. I was wondering if anyone has suggestions about games that their LOs enjoy playing? Alex loves being talked to and having smiles/conversations, but every time I try to engage playtime or make goofy faces, he looks confused and scared. Peek-a-boo was not a success; he either doesn't like having his face hidden or he looks elsewhere when DH and I cover our faces. He doesn't really like Trot-Trot to Boston (a game where you gently bounce the baby on your knee) either. He's also just starting to grasp his blanket, so he doesn't really hold/reach for tangible playthings like rattles.

We finally have had some success the other night with Patty-Cake, so I'm eager to try more. Does your LO have a game that he or she loves to play with you?

Re: Games to play with LO

  • Not really yet. My LO is enjoying mirrors lately. We got him a little one that props up for tummy time. He's also starting to grasp things and really enjoys the "crinkly" toys and books that we have. I'll be following this thread for more ideas...

  • My LO likes itsy bitsy spider also. I play with his toes and sing "this little piggy". Other than that my husband plays with him while he plays with captain calamari and other Lamaze toys and tells him stories about the animal.

I just read about month four in the Doctor Sears book. It suggests mirror play, conversing with baby, giving baby soft rattles and attaching things to babies feet to kick and make move/noise.

  • My LO needs constant games! His favorites are standing him up so he can bounce, raspberries on his tummy, Kisses on his neck and face, mother baby squealing match, silly songs, chatting with his dad, wrestle off daddies glasses, baby gym (he likes when my partner or I get down and play in the gym with him, and cardboard books he can snatch and chew.

My dd loves me to sing the wheels on the bus and I have her do the hand motions. She also loves old McDonald
  • Our LO loves loud obnoxious kisses everywhere. Raspberries on her feet, tummy and neck are also hilarious. Crinkly toys are awesome, or anything thank clacks together (plastic keys on a ring). She loves playing in the bath with me or when I sing to her.

I just have to experiment with something new every day and I get different reactions. Just now when I was changing her diaper I gave her a loud fast lecture on how many diapers she goes through. I've never seen her laugh so hard. I guess she likes that I have to change so many diapers...

  • Patty cake is a new favorite. She has a few crinkly toys she loves. I have started singing Christmas tunes to her which earn me a smile. She also enjoys just hanging out with me...and loves to watch me play Candy Crush...lol

  • I literally JUST came here to ask the same thing! I feel like we do the same things over and over and I'm getting bored. I totally forgot all about Patty-Cake! It's so hard to know how to play with my baby and entertain her!

Some things that we do/play: She likes it when I sing songs, like The Monkeys on the Bed. She gets a kick out of going up and down - I lay her down on my lap and say "up" then put her in a sitting position, then say "down" and then lay her back down. She gets a kick out of it for some reason.

I also bought an O-ball for DD and it's the greatest things to help her figure out what her hands do. She can easily grab it. She loves to try and shove it in her mouth. My friends 15 month old also loves it so it's inexpensive and I think she'll use it for a long time. Any toys that crinkle are also great.

This is the O-ball I have and they make other types too: https://www.toysrus.com/buy/baby-toys/rattles-teethers/o-ball-rattle-orange-1031-3583270

I recently put her in her jolly jumper for the first time, She has a musical mat that goes under it and she looooves that. I'll also stand her up on the bathroom counter and let her look at herself and talk. She smiles and laughs at herself.

I'm looking forward to see what games other people play!

  • My husband plays drum, so he'll take her hands and pretends to play while making the sounds. She loves it she cracks up every time.
  • Head, shoulders, knees and toes is a favorite. He also loves the "I'm gonna get ur belly" followed by raspberry blows. Large oversized books so that when his eyes wander they are still on the book ;)
  • Pretty much everything listed above. I turn pandora nursery rhymes on and just sing along, dance and move her arms and legs around. Keep in mind that just because you are bored of doing the same thing over and over doesn't mean LO is. They are still mastering simple skills....endless patty cake may be torture to you, but your LO is trying to learn how to clap on their own. (A general "you" in this comment)
  • We do this piggy went to the market and here comes the mousy all where we tickle her. She loves it. She also loves airplane and being on her activity mat. She likes to look at herself and talk to herself in the mirror too.

  • I agree with the above. Patty cakes is his fav right now. Great thread!

  • LO loves "I know an old lady who swallowed a fly" and his "Happy Hippo Angry Duck" book. He loves the pictures in the book but even if I just recite it he gets all happy. We've been doing some peek a boo as well. And we roll and kick balls which he loves.
  • Love this thread! We do lots of things that are mentioned here.. I love singing Down By The Bay (because it can go on forever) and Hush Little Baby (for the same reason). We also bought a cheap little rattle that he absolutely loves.

He's recently started to try to grab my phone out of my hands.. Fun for him. Not fun for mama.
  • We also do a lot of the things listed here. My LO is grasping and loves playing under his activity mat and would sit forever in the swing and touch any soft toy that is colorful and crinkles.

I made up a little game that I usually play with him on the changing table when he is naked- I like his skin to get some air. I take his arms and pull them up to his head and say "your arms are at your head" and then I just go down his body "your arms are at your sides" "your hands are on your toes" and then I'll stretch his arms out to the sides and say "your hands are like a bird" and then I bring them in to hug himself and I say "big hugs" and we repeat. We can usually get a few rounds in. I am hoping it helps him discover his body a little bit and learn how to control his motions.

Daddy just has to say hi to him and he giggles like crazy. He also talks to him in different fake accents and LO LOVES it. Seriously loves it.

Haha my husband also does different accents! It cracks me up!
