Bye bye Pacifier...

We have let this go for waaaaay too long with DS, and we know it has to go. DS loves his paci, only has it for nap and night time, and knows that his paci 'lives' in the crib only... But we have decided that this is it. Taking it away cold turkey tomorrow... In fact, throwing any and all in the trash so we are not tempted to give in when the tears start... But I am dreading it. It's my own fault, but of course I hate seeing my loves upset. :(. Any tips or words of wisdom for me?? I am terrified he will stop napping altogether. DD never used one, so this is new territory for us... I know there are methods to take it away gradually, but I just feel like it's prolonging the inevitable.

    No words of wisdom, but I'll be watching this thread... We're planning to get rid of it at the end of December. She uses it in the car and while sleeping, and we'll be in the car a lot over the holidays - I don't want us to be completely miserable at that time, so we're waiting til after Christmas.

    Yeah, I'm with Nicb13 on this one... I don't see what the big deal is.  I don't want him out in public with is, but if it helps him sleep better and it isn't causing any harm, I am not bothered by it. We use it during naps and at night.  We always keep one in the diaper bag in case we need it, but seldom have to use it.
    I'll stop the use of the paci when I feel he's ready.  We're not there yet.

    We're in the same camp as the previous posters...DS still gets his to sleep and occasionally in the car. His doc isn't worried and our pediatric dentist said he doesn't worry until kids are closer to 3. It comforts him and helps him sleep. When DS1 gave up his pack (2.5) that was the end of good naps.

    This is interesting to me- our pediatric dentist told me it needed to go ASAP when I had him in about a month ago. My sister is a speech pathologist and she seconded that, thus the decision was made. So far so good, we shall see how bedtime goes.

    DD just turned 20 months and still uses her paci.  She pretty much uses it for napping and bedtime, but honestly, she spits it out shortly after she falls asleep.  I don't think she's actually sucking on it very much.  She's always quit things cold turkey on her own and never looked back (baby food, bottles, etc.)  I'm not too worried about it.  I know she will give it up when she's ready. As long as they use it sparingly, I don't see the issue with it.  It's something comforting to them.
