2nd Trimester

Calling all users of MIRALAX:

So - I have this ....  issue & the Dr just told me I can take Miralax.  This morning I took my 2nd dose (yesterday was the first).  How long did it take to....clear the pipes?  When it happened, was it scary (like you HAD to get to the bathroom right then & there)?

I was hoping to have something happen this weekend - so as to NOT have the URGE take over me - - - ON the train, or in the middle of a meeting.

So - tell me what to expect, please : )

  • I don't know if this is the same exact thing as colace, but that took about 3 days to really take effect for me.

  • No, it's not the same.  I've taken colace, and the Dr moved me up to Miralax.  Colace is only a softener.  Miralax is a laxative (miracle laxative).  Dr told me to "be careful" that this is the stuff they use to clean out patients before a colonoscopy!

Ahh! I will definitely be asking about that at my appt this week then. Because colace isn't quite cutting it lol.

Yeah  def. ask.  My Doc said I can even take Miralax every single day if I want - but said to be careful... lol.  He also said I can use more or less than the directions call for - once I find out how I react to it.  Some people only need a little, some alot.

    * * * Do yourself a favor & search online for a coupon b4 you buy...  I didn't & the stuff is expensive!  I got the smallest container for $7.99 & then realized it's only for 7 once daily doses!!!  I think the bigger the bottle, the better the value.  Biggest bottle was close to $30.00 * * *

  • Miralax was my miracle during the first trimester. I would take it in the afternoon or evening usually and I had a perfectly normal intact bowel movement the following morning. No freight trains here. Regular old Miralax is prescribed by pediatricians for children so it's very mild. You shouldn't have any OMG the floor is falling out moments from it unless you do something stupid like take it with a couple Fiber 1 bars. I made that mistake out of desperation once and regretted it.

thanks for the tips! I will definitely look and be sure to go to Target for that one since they're cheaper than our pharmacy for stuff like that.

  • Hi! I'm not a Miralax user.. but a pharmacist.. usually it's 2-4 days until you'll get the full results, and it shouldn't be an urgency thing like a stimulant laxative.. more like Colace ;)

    Good luck!

  • Julie - thanks for the warning - although I don't eat fiber one bars... I typically have about 35+ grams of fiber per day....  Fiber one cereal with lots of fruits & veggies throughout the day in addition to whole grain/whole wheat.  I'll make sure not to increase my fiber any more than that!  lol....

Pharm - thanks for the info : )  I'm in desperate need for something to happen - but was afraid to go to work tomorrow.  Glad to know I should be fine on the train ride in!

  • Miralax takes a few days but you can titrate the dose. and it is not an immediate thing like lactulose

One caution....my doc said Miralax is a pregnancy cat C and told me to stop taking it. She has me on Colace and lactulose.

    call your doc

My dr said that it's completely safe for pregnant women because it never actually gets into your blood system.  It goes straight to the gut and is absorbed there to get it's work done.  I am on a high dose of continuous zofran through a pump in my leg, so constipation is a major issue for me.

My Doc is the one who suggested Miralax.  However, I will call the nurse on monday to double check - - - and make sure my Doc wasn't having an off moment.....  Thanks!

  • When you first start it, it can take a couple days. If you keep taking it, though, it will really help to keep you regular.

I totally used Miralax a ton in the first trimester...took me at least 3 days worth of drinking it in some water (one-two times/day).  And it was NOT scary :)  The relief was worth it.  I have found that I need even more water these days to keep things moving.  I am up to 96 ounces of water/day, but could use to drink a little more.

  • Miralax is safe during all trimesters of pregnancy. It is NOT a stimulant laxative...it just absorbs more water into your system to make it easier to go. You won't be running to the bathroom with it, it is a gentle way to go! But it will take two to three days to work!

My Ob and nurse both sad colace is perfectly safe and fine, what do you mean by "class c"?

  • I take miralax and colace twice a day and it takes me about 3 days to become "regular" :)
  • I'm on Zofran and take Miralax everyday. If my BMs are less solid then I just decrease the next day's dose.
Walgreens has a generic version that $2-3 cheaper than the name brand.
  • I used Miralax once... I mixed it with Propel (flavored water)... and it only took 2 hours before I ran to the bathroom (At the grocery store...) and had an "attack" I felt a million times better... but was also glad it wasn't my bathroom... SORRY TMI!!!! I have never had to use it since though... I'm regular at the moment... THANK GOD.

  • I had to take it twice a day for three days before it worked.  And it is not scary at all, it is a very gentle form of relief.  Nothing like you would get with a laxative.  I also find that it was very important to drink a lot of water to...ahem...keep things moving.

  • A lot of stores carry a comparable store brand. It's all FDA regulated. I've used the Kroger brand before and it works.

DS #1 born January 2010. DS #2 due June 2014.

  • I don't take it but my 2 yr old does and it took about three days to get things moving.
