Almond Milk drinkers- question

Where do you buy your Almond milk and what brand do you buy? I looked at the ones in my grocery store and the huge list of ingredients on the side of the carton makes me raise an eyebrow. Wondering if there is a more "natural" brand out there.

DS2 started whole milk about a month ago (after the green light from the pedi). He was fine for a couple of weeks, but for the last two weeks he has been having huge diaper blow outs and major diaper rash. Now, this could be because he has been on a new antibiotic after FOUR others didn't clear up his ear infections or maybe it's the milk?

None of us are lactose intolerant and I eat a lot of cheese (he's EBF) and he never had an issue. But the poop is so bad and this is the only thing I have control over so I thought maybe I could try and remove the whole milk and try almond milk and see if his poop gets better.

Sorry for the novel!

ETA- and how do you send it to daycare? DS2 takes it in his sippy at lunch. Do you send in a container for the week? Or one cup per day?

  • I am no help on the almond milk but DS went through a similar thing with an ear infection that wouldn't go away, multiple antibiotics, and horrible poop and diaper rash.  The pedi had us avoid dairy because she said that even if a kid is not usually sensitive to it they can have a hard time digesting it after the antibiotics.  It helped a little, plus we went through gobs of Triple Paste.

  • Ugh, now I feel awful. I didn't realize he could have a problem with milk and not with other diary products. I also didn't think I shouldn't be giving it to him while on an antibiotic. I will stop giving it to him for now and see if it gets better.

We are seeing the ENT today to see if he needs tubes :(

My DS is this way too. No milk, but can have other dairy. His problems started when he was BFing though so I had to cut out dairy too. I would guess that it's the antibiotics upsetting his system more than dairy allergy though. That is very common side effect of antibiotics, especially multiple rounds.

For the ear infections, I highly recommend trying garlic oil. I was skeptical, but there are a lot of people who believe repeating antibiotics for ear infections only makes them recur more often. When you start getting multiple rounds going, you are killing every good bacteria in the body along with the bad. Then their body has to recover from that with little to no defense system, hence the reinfection. Treating the infection at the source with a natural anti-inflamitory/antibiotic helps the ear recover without killing the immune system in the process.

I was on antibiotics for ear infections my whole life  and had tubes in and out. My older DS gets them constantly. Last time he started complaining I tried the garlic oil remedy and the pain stopped in a day, he went in for his check up two weeks later and no infection. He had been previously prescribed two rounds of antibiotics that didn't kill the infection and when they prescribed the third round I finally decided to try something new.

There is a lot of info online about it and you can make your own or order it on amazon. Read about it here:

Also, I would definitely get him on some probiotics to replace the good bacteria that is getting killed off in his tummy from all these antibiotics. That in itself might really help clear up the poop problems.

  • A milk substitute really isn't necessary. I don't give DD milk of any kind. We are just now trying cheese and hidden dairy per GI recommendations. DD drinks only water. She is perfectly healthy.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
