So I'm not a full-fledged vegetarian but I've never been a fan of meat and hardly ever eat any. I hate nuts also. It's never been much of a problem but now that I'm pregnant, I should probably incorporate more protein into my diet. For someone who dislikes meat and nuts, what should I do?
I'm vegan and have no trouble getting 100 g of protein a day. Don't forget all foods have protein, so if you eat enough calories and a varied diet, you're going to get enough. Great non-animal sources include: tofu, tempeh, beans, nuts and seeds, or meat alternatives like veggie burgers.
I’m vegan too and although I haven’t been pregnant before I am
going to school for dietetics and there are plenty of options out there for
you. My favorite is Hemp Powder. I put it in smoothies in the morning, its
perfect with frozen berries and soy milk. 3 Tabl have 15g of Protein so it’s
a great way to start your day. I buy mine online in bulk to save money and it
last a while. I also really like snacking on hummus which is
high in protein and it’s great with vegies!
Vegan #3 here. I agree with the ladies above. Protein powder in your smoothie is a great way to sneak in protein. Beans, organic/sprouted tofu, tempeh, and seitan are my usual go-tos in a meal, but I also sneak in hemp seeds in my salads and chia in my breakfast. Many grains can be a good source of protein: whole wheat products, quinoa, amaranth, millet...Additionally, there are a lot of veggies that have protein that you wouldn't think of. Google can really be your friend on this as there are plenty of articles posted by vegans/vegetarians as a result of the ever annoying question that we get asked constantly: "How do you get your protein". Here, I'll get you started: https://www.nomeatathlete.com/vegetarian-protein/.
You got good suggestions, but anytime this comes up all I can think of is the Friends episode where Phoebe is pregnant and craves deli meat. LOL in my imagination that happens to all vegetarians.
I compare almost every real life situation to an episode of Friends. BUT, I'm pretty sure there is no way I will crave meat during my pregnancy. The thought of eating meat grosses me out, so I can't imagine that pregnancy hormones and nausea will 180 that. If anything, I'll be even more repulsed by the site and smell.
