DH and I both felt that for us personally 2 things were most important for our kids names - 1) real, not made up names with the correct spellings, and 2) names that are not so popular that they are just one among 3 others in their class. I'm relieved that our future girl name isn't on the top 100, (especially since we can't use it yet) but I am a just a little bit disapointed that our boy name for this LO has cracked the top 100 (even though it was just barely so we'll still use it). I know that plenty of people don't care how popular their name is if they like it and want to use it, so I am probably a bit more concerned about this than most. I will admit to abandoning several beautiful names that were on my list since I was a kid myself because they became too popular. I guess it's because I did enjoy growing up with a name that was not very common, so I think that is why I want it for my kids.
Dang it! Number 5! Oh well! Her name is Mia and i am not changing it!!
My DD is Mia and in 2008 it was #15 I think. I didn't even care if it was popular, I had wanted it since I was like 14. For what it's worth, she was the only Mia in her old daycare and in her new center so it's not like it matters. We were considering Aiden for this guy, it's #2, I think I know two in real life. For me I'd rather have it be too popular than too unique/weird.
That can't be the "official" (aka social security) list right? That one won't come out until mid March at least as 2013 isn't over yet!
@Bridenamedmeg The link referenced in the articles is from babycenter. They say they compiled it from names submitted from half a million parents in 2013. I used the Social Security website when researching and choosing names and found that this list mirrors it very closely in past years, so it will give you a pretty good idea if you don't want to wait until after your baby is born to consult the "official" list.
We have a Mason and knew it was popular... we loved it before it became more popular (Kardashians?)... but I don't care if it's on the list We only know of 1 or 2 other Masons and we aren't even close to those people - and the kids are all older. So whatevs If you like it, you like it!
Despite having traditional names, neither of my kids are on there. My daughter was #750 last year (but not in the top 1000 the year she was born) and Graham was #312.
Our boy's name is #30 and our fave girl's name (if baby #2 is a girl) is #25. I'm ok with those numbers! I don't think I would change our name choice based on the list.
@nicrenn, I, too, have abandoned names that became too popular. I always wanted to name a daughter Evelyn (nickname Evey, like my dad's cousin), but it's too popular now Last year our boy name was #141, I believe, and has continued to be on the rise for the past few years
Unplanned pregnancy July 2005; EDD 3/27/06; birthdaughter born 3/15/06 (38w2d) (placed for adoption).
TTC since December 2012, BFP 6/25/13. EDD 3/2/14. Baby Elias born 2/21/14 (38w5d)!

I'm sure there's lots over overlap, but I would be beyond shocked if Jackson ends up in the #1 spot for 2013 on the SSA list. It was 22 in 2012.
We are using a family name, Avadelle Grace, but shortening it to Ava which is number 6. That being said, I am a teacher and have only had 1 Ava in 8 years in the classroom. Hopefully it's a regional thing and in my part of Texas it won't be that popular.

I would recommend spending a little bit of time on the blog at babynamewizard.com before abandoning a name I loved (and that had a family connection) because of popularity. As the woman who writes that blog points out, there is now a much greater diversity of names than there were even 30 years ago. So, there are just fewer babies born named the #1 name now than there were in the 1980s. Even if you use a top 10 name, the chances that your kid will be Jessica A. or Jennifer B. or whatever is just so much lower than it was a generation back.
Of course, there will always be naming pockets--you may randomly know six little Henry's. But the overall numbers are in our favor.
Yess! I'm so happy neither of my names are in the list. I'm all about unique and uncommon names. I know the names I've picked haven't been popular in quite a while and Iike that.
