Talk to me about Thrush...

I think I have thrush.

My LO does not have the tell tale white patches, but I have itchy, sunburned feeling nipples and occasional stab-tastic pains in them. I have no lumps or hard bits to indicate mastitis or plugged ducts. Just very itchy boobs.

I'm meeting with my LC tomorrow and I plan to call the ped and my GP as well, but I also know some people use more holistic / natural remedies. Any tips? Anyone have experience with going through a doctor versus trying to take care of it without doctor intervention? (Horror and success stories welcome.)

Re: Talk to me about Thrush...

  • I did the doctor/medicine route and it sucked. (Nistatin) I also only had it on my nips, LO did not get it that I could see.

I gave up when it did nothing after 5 days. Then I tried the vinegar washes and grapefruit seed extract. That did not work after 5 more days, it helped but was not clearing it fast enough for me. Then I did gentian violet and it was gone after one treatment. I did a second just for good measure. LO turned purple for about 24 hours but it was gone!

Good luck, it is so painful and annoying!

  • Gentian violet also worked for me.
  • It's just one thing after another after another after another for you isn't it? I can't believe you might have trush now after everything you've been through already. I'm sorry.

I had a very mild case a few weeks ago. Sun burnt feeling, itchy nips. LO had no signs other than fussier feedings. I did vinegar washed after each feeding and was religious about charging nursing pads after each wash. It went away in 2-3 days. Good luck!

  • I'm a lurker from September, but I'm dealing with it now. LO had it badly in her mouth. We did Nystatin...4 times a day for 2 weeks! Plus I was putting cream on my nipples. It greatly improved, but didn't get rid of it. We're on our second round of Nystatin. It's gross and I hate treating DD with it. I've got Gentian Violet on it's way from Amazon. Hoping it's successful. For those who have used it, how often did you do it? Twice a day? And did you just paint your nips? DD has it in her mouth, but nothing like the first time.

  • I followed the advice here about how to use the gentian violet. https://www.breastfeedinginc.ca/content.php?pagename=doc-CP

I painted my nipple then fed LO to get in her mouth. Treated us both at once. I did it only once a day for two days, but it felt 100% better after day one.

Thrush sucks a big, fat, hard one!

I had it a while ago and it's so painful.  My LO never had the symptoms in her mouth but she had a horrible yeast rash (further complicated by the fact that we cloth diaper).  I followed the advice on this article and did everything except for the gentian violet.  My OB was able to call in a script for APNO for me.  I also did probiotics, GSE washes and capsules and I had a friend who's a PA call in a script for diflucan for me.  It was gone in about 2 weeks.  I also put the APNO on my LO's butt for her yeast rash which worked wonders.  And, I broke apart a probiotic capsule and rubbed the medicine in LO's mouth and she never developed the white patches.

ETA: I also changed nursing pads after every use and tried to let my nips "air out" as much as possible.  I don't think I wore a bra for weeks lol

This made me LOL because that is exactly what my LC said.

I realize this sounds stupid, but I have no prior experience. With the vinegar washes, did you do your breasts and LOs mouth? Or how did you treat LO?

LO didn't have any symptoms so I just treated myself. I put a tablespoon and a half of vinegar into a cup of water. I'd use a cotton swab to clean each nipple (no double dipping and separate swabs for each nip) then air dry REALLY well before putting on a new nursing pad. There are different methods out there, but this is just the one that worked for me.

I had a really mild case and I think we caught it fairly early which probably has something to do with why it cleared up so fast. It might be worth a try for you though.

  • I just did the medicine/doctor route and it sucked balls. If you can find a holistic way to do it, do that first! I hope it heals quickly, it's no fun at all!!
  • Okay. Got my GV and my antifungal cream, and my grape seed extract.

Sounds like I may be at it for awhile.

Thank you ladies for all the advice and well wishes!

  • @bellaoso make sure it is grapefruit seed extract. Not grape! :) totally different things.

How does the doc diagnose thrush? I've had a tingling feeling for months now. But no pain. Could it be thrush?

LOL! I realized I bought the right stuff, but typed the wrong stuff. Thank you for catching that!

Mine was slightly itchy and then my nipples started to feel kind of sunburned. The fact the the anti fungal ointment helped within 24 hours has been my big tip off.
