Fussing at the breast

Hi- I'm new and have been lurking a bit and thought id ask a question. I have a 2 day old and probably and just jumping the gun but she is very fussy when I try to breast feed her. She sometimes latches on great and then will suck but then she fusses and pulls away and this happens over and over and then she falls asleep. I'm scared she isn't getting anything. She will also at other times root around and then when brought to the breast won't latch but instead crys and fusses but I still try and try. I can compress and colostrum comes out and I try to put some on her lips to entice her to latch and suck but I'm not sure what to do. Is she just still learning and my milk isn't coming in yet? I talked with a lactation consultant and she just said keep bringing her to the breast and try over and over and she will learn but I want to know if anyone else has gone through this and it gets better? Thank you so much!!!

  • I had the same problem. Is your LO just a little upset or red faced? Mine was red face mad and at a LC's suggestion I used sugar water to calm her and prepare her for what she was getting (1-3 ml) and then used the sugar water in a small syringe to get her latched. Bfing was not a one person job for awhile, but she eventually got it.

Just know it gets better! You can do it!

  • How long did you have to do that for until she got it? She is upset but not red faced. Thank you.

It took about a week. It wasn't a miracle cure but it helped. Just remember to stay calm. If you get worked up your LO will get worked up too.

  • My LO did this until about day 3 or 4 when my milk came in!
  • This sounds normal to me. BF takes a long time to get very comfortable with and it takes time for the milk to come in. What's happening is normal.

If you are concerned about what she's getting, express some colostrum (or pump if you have one) into a tiny medicine cup and cup feed her. I shit you not, my 1 day old drank colostrum from a cup this way with no problem. Just gently push the cup down on her lower lip and under her tongue and drip it in.

Stay calm and be patient and persistent and it will all work out!

  • Going through this right now with my two day old. LC at hospital said out methods look good, but it's normal. Keep at it. LO just doesn't open wide enough ever to get that great latch. I squeeze and get drops, but just worry she's not getting enough. Her first 24 hrs was red faced screaming fussiness and hardly slept and day two is so much sleep. Everything is a worry.
