WWSAIFD? RE: Dentist and two one year olds!

Last night, DS1 fell and started screaming. DH saw the fall, but didn't see him hit anything, so we didn't know why he was screaming. We saw blood on his cheek, but never found the source of the bleed. This morning, we saw a huge blood clot over his front tooth. I have an appt with my dentist this afternoon for a check in.

I have no daytime child care and DH works 50 min away with no traffic. If he comes home to watch DS2, he will have to go back in tonight or stay late for a few evenings to make up the time. He only sees the boys for 30 min in the morning and 30 min in the evening, so I hate to have him gone even more. But, I'm nervous about holding DS1 down while dealing with a very fussy DS2 (molars are horrible!!). DS2 has insane stranger anxiety, so he'll already be angry to be in the office without me holding him. Plus, he'd have to be away from me if they took x-rays on DS1. If the roles were reversed, it'd be no issue, as DS1 loves everyone and would be thrilled with the attention from new people. But, DS2 will lose his mind.

So, how bad do you think the dentist will be? Any thoughts on how to manage both (other than snacks, books...)? Am I crazy for even considering taking both?

ETA: Oh, and how could I forget!? The appt is also during nap time. Awesome.

Re: WWSAIFD? RE: Dentist and two one year olds!

  • DD1 knocked out a tooth when she was 11mos old. We took her to the dentist and the whole visit lasted like 10 minutes. The dentist looked around in her mouth and that was it. No X-rays and it wasn't that traumatic. I held her in my lap while we were there.

I hope your apt goes well. Can you keep your one child in a stroller while you hold the other one for the dentist?

  • @CarrieB- I'm hoping I can convince DS2 to stay in the stroller. I don't think the double will fit in the exam area, but I am going to Ergo DS1 and put DS2 in the single umbrella stroller. He HATES it when I do that for pedi appts, but in hoping he'll be in a decent mood with a full belly and loads of books. Thanks so much for the input. FIL is a dental prof and said he doubts they'd do X-rays, so I'm hoping we will have a similar experience :).

  • They ended up pushing my appointment back 40 min, so DH came. Thank goodness! The exam area had so many cords and baby hazards. DS2 was flipping out that he couldn't get down. And, my big boy DS1 did AWESOME with the dentist!! Proud mom moment. Now, we just watch for signs of infection or non vitality in the tooth. Phew!

  • No way I would only take one! I can see the madness now not to mention the stress on you. I would rather have dh gone for a night then have to be split in two to make both happy not to mention ds getting looked out will not be a happy camper. Good luck!
