Got a new job! When to give notice at the current one?

Sorry this may be long, ladies. I got a job offer on Tuesday! Yay! It's on the other side of the country, near our families and we're both really excited.

But now we need to orchestrate a cross-country move over the holidays. At least we don't have a house to sell and our lease is month-to-month. I'm waiting on the offer letter to land in my inbox before I give notice, and I'm curious if you ladies could give me some advice on timing my departure.

Here's the complicating factors:
- I've been there 8 years and I'm a senior manager.
- it's a really busy time for me when I do some key hiring for 2014. I won't be able to complete it all but will make as much progress as possible.
- 2 weeks notice would be insufficient and seen as a "screw you" to my current job
- I'll be in the same industry so I need good recs from this job.

So is end of calendar year enough time if I get my notice in Monday or Tuesday? Knowing that there are many not-useful work days in there? What if I don't get the offer letter until later in the week?

Very excited but freaking out about all there is to do!

  • Definitely wait until you have a firm, unconditional offer in hand! Then see how much wiggle room the two companies can give you. But do give as much notice as possible. If you're doing key hiring now, that's complicating. The person who will be managing these folks may want a say in that. And transition plans are a way to leave your employer with a good taste in their mouth. Always a smart idea! Congrats!!

  • I would say giving them a months notice is very sufficient . Very few new jobs would be willing to let you start much later than that in my opinion especially given that you need time to move across country etc .
  • Thanks ladies. Doesn't happen at my workplace that you get shown the door as soon as you give notice. It's a small nonprofit - there really is no one else to absorb the work when someone leaves, so they generally prefer long lead time. That way they can start searching for a replacement right away.

I hope my offer letter comes tomorrow.

  • I have mine a month lead while I was still on maternity leave so the contractor they hired could interim the work and then train the person they found. I had everything cleared and home with me because I planned on getting a new job. I just has no idea where at the time lol.

  • I'd give notice as soon as that offer letter comes in.
