Favorite Christmas cookies (or other desserts)

Because I am optimistic that I will be have the energy to bake cookies with my DD in the next few weeks, I'm gathering a list of what types of cookies we want to make.  I know we'll do Snickerdoodles and probably M&M cookies, but I'm trying to do somethign we don't normally make - so what are your favorites (and a link for the recipe would be spectacular!).

Re: Favorite Christmas cookies (or other desserts)

  • I'm a chocolate cookie fan:) My mom did these chocolate sugar cookies that I love and I usually make them..Similar to this recipe but instead of sprinkling sugar on top just roll it in colored sugar..can be fun with kids:)

(this isn't the recipe my mom uses but I can't currently find it..they look close though- I think we used buttermilk not "sour milk")

I baked Pecan Pie bars over Thanksgiving and my in-laws could not stop raving about them! Will bake them again for Christmas. This recipe is very easy and oh so good!

  • I just posted a picture of these in another post! My grandma used to make them when I was little and I taught myself to make them so I could share with my mom:) My mom passed away this March and while making these the other day it just made me so happy that I get to share this with my kids. The cookies is KrumKake, a Norwegian crispy cookie that is delightful!

  • I love making a kitchen sink cookies. I make a chocolate chip cookie recipe and add in whatever I want in it like M&Ms pretzels, peanut butter chips, toffee, and drizzle caramel over it.

  • Here's what I usually bake (I rarely do all of these, but usually do some combination):

    Chocolate covered pretzels
    Fudge
Sugar Cookies - they don't really taste that great, IMO, but I love to decorate them.
    Peppermint bark
Chocolate Peanut Butter bars or balls, but the bars are easier
    Cranberry bars
    Pumpkin cookies

  • Russian Tea cakes are my absolute favorite!

Next week, MIL, SIL, soon to be SIL and I all get together and do our annual cookie exchange. We all bring two recipes and spend all day baking. We end up with a TON of cookies. I love it!

You can also make them with the red and white stripped kisses (or Hugs I think) instead of Rolos for a pretty Christmas look. And I look for the pretzels that are shaped like window panes.

  • I always make shortbread and gingersnaps.
Last year I bought a bag of those old-fashioned pretzels that are thick (like finger sized), and dipped them in chocolate (half in white, half in dark) a and then rolled them in crushed candy cane. Then you just put them on wax paper to set.
Everyone loved them, and they were so easy!

  • I always do plain sugar cookies, checkerboard cookies (in red and green), gingersnaps or molasses cookies, and my families secret Pfeffernusse recipe (it's a German cookie that has candied fruit minced in it, as well as close to 10 different spices) you have to let the cookies sit for at least 2wks before you eat them so the flavor melds! They are DELICIOUS!!!!

  • Ricotta cookies (aka Italian cookies)

This is pretty much the one we use.

I also like the butter cookies that people usually color red or green using food coloring with sugar sprinkled on top.

We make something like this called witch tits. Square pretzels, bake them with Hershey kisses until just starting to melt and put an m&m on top and let cool. We will do that with red and green m&ms.
