FTM confused about when to buy what!

So I haven't bought anything yet except for a few onesies and bibs I loved. I was going to wait until after I had a shower to see what we would get and then buy what we need since we don't have too much money. Today one of my girlfriends could not believe I hadn't bought stuff and wasn't ready for the baby. Should I be buying things now myself for baby? Or wait for after my shower? Not sure what to do she just made me feel stupid that we weren't "ready" yet. Is there certain things I should be buying now myself?

  • What all are you registering for? We did wait until after the shower to purchase a lot of things (and, because of generous friends and family, there really didn't end up being much left on the registry), but we didn't register for nursery furniture, bedding or decor, so we slowly began accumulating that stuff starting somewhere in the middle of 2nd Tri.

I don't think it's weird at all that you haven't bought much. I'd just maybe make a list of things that aren't on your registry that you think you need / want and begin thinking about when you want to buy them (think about year end sales!). You still have tons of time!

I always bought whenever and whatever I wanted. I'm actually glad I didn't rely on my shower (even though I waited until after it to buy things) to get most of what I wanted or needed because I didn't get much more than blankets, bottles or clothes at my shower.

ETA: Whenever I bought something off my registry I always marked it as bought too.

  • Thanks! I registered for everything just so after the shower I could use he completion coupon... Our furniture is on there because our parents are going to purchase it but after the shower so they get the discount.. Thanks for making me feel better I just thought I was so behind lol
  • Thanks! We put aside money every paycheck to save for baby :)
  • I would make purchases whenever you're ready.  Only you know what your personal finances are, thus when you would be able to make purchases.  I just had my shower last weekend and I got mostly clothing, blankets, towels, and stuffed animals.  We used gift cards and cash gifts to purchase the crib, dresser, and change table yesterday.  Just do what's right for you.  You'll get tons of advice during pregnancy and after you have children.  Do what works for you.
  • Lets see, most of our babies aren't viable yet. If we had a baby now, it'd be horrific. We would not need all the things. If baby is born in the next month or two or three, probably nicu, still time to shop. After your shower is just fine. We just have some second hand sleepers, some I bought, swaddle blankets, and a lovey blanket so far. We won't buy anything else really until February and that's a Feb-end of march buy all the things with the weeks we have the least bills due lol.

  • The only thing I've been told (FTM, too) is that furniture can sometimes take awhile to be delivered, and that can be an issue if it shows up the first time damaged or the wrong color.  Our furniture was just purchased, and it won't be delivered until mid-end of January.  Obviously this would be different if we bought it on Amazon, but great-grandma bought it for us and is a JCPenney fanatic.
  • We are waiting until after our showers too. The only things I have purchased are a stroller (it was on sale and more expensive than I think anyone would have gotten as a shower gift) and a twin nursing pillow (nearly new and cheap at a second hand store.) Other than that, I think we will only spend money on the nursery renovation until we have a better idea what we will still need. Parents have offered to buy cribs and car seats so those are taken care of, too.
