NBR: If you have a real Christmas tree

If you have (or have had in the past) a real Christmas tree do you do anything special to take care of it? DH and I got our tree over the weekend (went to a tree farm and cut it down ourselves - so much fun) and I was wondering if there is anything special we should be doing to keep it fresh as long as possible. It's DH's first real tree, and the first time I've had one as an adult. I just figured that I should keep it watered, but someone mentioned to me this weekend that their family always "fed" the tree lemon-lime soda. I'd never heard of that and wondered if it's something I should consider. Does anyone have any tips or tricks to share?

  • I don't know that it does anything, but I remember my dad having my mom pour sugar water into the tree stand.

  • I just made sure it had plenty of water every day. Usually put the tree up early Dec and left it up until around the new year. They have always still looked great when they were taken down.

  • My grandpa told us to put it in a bucket of sand. Supposedly it lasts longer

  • Before you put up the tree, trim the bottom.  All we've ever done is water.  My mom tried sugar water once, but the tree seemed to go downhill faster that year.  Just be sure to check it a lot the first few days, because trees will suck back water initially and then start to slow down.

  • I've always just trimmed the bottom and added fresh water regularly to the base

  • I've heard corn syrup helps preserve it. They sell christmas tree food - kind of like the little flower food packets you get in a bouquet.

  • We use Prolong.  They sell it at the Christmas tree farm we go too and it works like a charm.  You mix it with your tree water and it keeps the tree fresh for a long time!

  • The tree farm recommended doing sprite/7-up the first time, that the sugar helped. We've done it and we've not done it. I didnt see much difference. Just make sure it always has water. They go through a ton at the beginning.
