Race on Birth Certificate

So, I'm just getting around to filling out LO's information for her Birth Certificate.  Better late than never, right?  On it it asks for the child's race.  I am Hispanic and my DH is bi-racial.  Frankly, I just don't know what to put down.  Is it acceptable to leave it blank?  I'm just wondering what other mothers of mixed children have written.  Hope this isn't too dumb of a question.

Re: Race on Birth Certificate

  • I'm a teacher, and in our state system that is used for attendance, grades, etc. there is a "not specified" race category. Is something like that an option?
  • Loading the player...
  • My application had that question but said it was optional for statistical purposes only and the answer did not actually appear on LOs birth certificate. Leaving it blank is probably fine.
  • I didn't fill that paperwork out either.... Our kids are mixed race as well. Not sure if it says on the birth certificate or not?
  • I select a few or the option for 2 or more, if it's there, or pick whichever one suits my mood that day. For DS' pedis appt I let DH choose and he choose one (which probably is 40% heritage). I now understand my gggrandparents from the border regions in Europe who would report that they were French on some docs and German on other docs, or Polish on some and Russian on others... Ethnicity or heritage or (during the war) changing borders.
