Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Talk to me about walking

Okay, so DD took her first step on her ten-month-birthday. A little over a week later she started taking two successive steps now and then. Now, at 11.5 months, she is still only taking a few steps successively (the most I have seen is four but typically it's two). Anyone else's kid taking this long from the start of steps to begin full-on walking?

I know I probably have nothing to worry about, but she hit all of her other milestones way ahead of time and everyone under the sun--our pediatrician included--proclaimed that she would be walking at ten months. (Not that I expected that exactly, but I did figure she would get the hang of walking faster than she has.) It seems like she's stalled out or something... Babies that were previously behind her in development seem to be passing her up left and right in this arena.

I'm sure I'm just paranoid but I would be interested to hear other experiences!

Re: Talk to me about walking

  • DS is 15 months and still only taking 2 steps if I'm standing there to catch him. I heard not to worry until 18 months.
  • Loading the player...
  • Don't rush it.  My LO's walking was slow in building but once he got it he was off.  And this was around 13 months.

  • @leftie22 I hear what you're saying. She is 11.5 months old now. My only concern stems from the fact that her own rate of development seems to have changed. I'm not worried about her being first at anything. Just interested to hear if others have (also) experienced a long period between first steps and actual walking. Thanks!

  • My son started taking steps around 10 months, built up to 7/8 steps around 11 months and wasn't until close to 12 months that he started really walking. He still prefers to hold my hand. He was an early crawler and is very good at it so I think he just has preferred crawling. My niece was similar. I wouldn't worry about the slow build up to walking. My son was predicted to be an early walker also, but turned out to be average with it. Walking is a scary milestone and ds had to build up his confidence coupled with his love for crawling made him in no rush to tackle walking. That's been my experience :)

I just replied to your post on 9-12 months, but K had over a two month gap between a few independent steps and full-on walking. I know it is easy to drive yourself crazy, especially when people are telling you your kid will be walking any day now, but try to relax.
Good to know! Thanks! You're right - it is seriously obnoxious to have people continually say your kid is going to be walking any minute.

  • My daughter showed interest in it around 11 months, but she was very wobbly and would always hold on to our hands. She did not take first steps by herself until around 13 months or so. She was not walking 100% on her own until she was 15.5 months old. So for her, she slowly worked her way up to the that point.

  • DS took months to go from 2-3 steps to actually walking. He didn't really walk until 15 months, almost 16 months. I completely understand being concerned, but like OP said, toddlers do what they want when they want. And once she starts walking, you will probably wish you didn't have to chase her. :)

  • My DD didn't walk until she was 15 months old. She just wasn't interested as she could crawl WAY faster than she could walk. All of a sudden she just started walking and then within a week she was running. Don't stress over it...they will do it when they are ready!

  • NO! Delay the walking! Me and my SO were so excited when our LO started to get her sea legs going. She can now run at 16 months and I've never been more tired lol.
  • My DD took a long time to move from first steps to full on walking.  Be glad your DD is taking her time!  It means she is being cautious.  My DS, on the other hand, pretty much went straight to running (and running full-tilt into various objects left and right).
