Job interview situation - advice/perspective (sorry, a bit long)

On Tuesday, 11/12, I had a second-round interview with the board of trustees for a job I really want. I felt that I nailed the interview with specific and thoughtful answers to their questions and demonstrated that I had done a ton of research into the company and believed in the mission of the organization.  As I was leaving, the executive director told me that I’d hear from them in two weeks.

On Thursday, 11/14, (two days later), the executive director personally called me at home in the evening to say that everyone thought I had a great meeting and they thought it went well.  He asked me for my salary information, and I told him what I am making now.  He sounded relieved and said, “We’re in the ballpark.”  He then told me to start thinking about who I would give as references.  He said he’d want one reference from a previous employer and one from my current employer, but that he wouldn’t call the current employer until there was an accepted offer and we had worked out the details.  I said, “no problem.”  He told me to call him by his first name in front of the administration, but “Mr. xxx” in front of the students (the job is at a school).  I said, “okay,” with a smile.  He said that if I didn’t hear from him the next day (Friday), that we’d talk on Monday.  I got off the phone thinking that I’d have an offer by at least the Monday after the weekend.

Monday came and went and he never called.  The whole week went by and he did not call.  I also checked email and my spam folder, just in case.  After the following weekend, he did not call again on the NEXT Monday.  By Tuesday, 11/26, I finally called and left a friendly and polite voicemail, expressing my continued interest in the position and stating that I wanted to follow up on the status.  I also wished him a Happy Thanksgiving.

He never returned my follow-up call.  Today is Monday, 12/2 and I have yet to hear from him or anyone else from this prospective employer, not even a blow-off email from his assistant.

I have no idea what is going on.  Any opinions?  Am I being blown off?  Did he speak out of turn about the salary and they can’t pay me?  (By the way, all I did was give my current salary info; I did not make any demands or say what I’d have to make.)  Should I just write this off as something that definitely won’t happen?  Do I even want to work for a place that treats candidates this way?  If they were to make me an offer, could I even trust them?  I am in my third trimester (which I was transparent about with them from even before they met me for the first round) and I can’t compromise my current employment for something unreliable.

I’m interested to know the perspective of others on this situation.  Thanks for any insights and/or suggestions for how to handle.

Re: Job interview situation - advice/perspective (sorry, a bit long)

  • DH went on a lot of interviews this year and this is exactly what happened most of the time. I think 75% of the interviews he went on, he never heard anything back. Even ones he thought he nailed, and was told he would be hearing something on wouldn't respond.

It sucks, it really does. I am sorry.

That being said, you called him last week right? Schools were closed all last week here, what about there? So could he of just received the message today when school resumed?

I am one of those weird people who thinks everything happens for a reason. DH went on interviews for what he thought was the perfect job. After almost 6 months of looking, he landed *the* perfect job, one better than any other job he went on an interview for. Hopefully you hear something soon, but if not, don't be discouraged.

  • I wouldn't write it off yet.  DD was unexpectedly very sick the week before Thanksgiving, I was out of the office for three days, and too stressed/involved with caring for her to do much.  Then Thanksgiving came and added more stuff to my backlog,

Something like this could have happened to any one of the people involved in the decision.  And while Mr. Smith is not handling the delays well, I'd say you still have a shot.  Give it until December 15, follow up with an email expressing your interest in the position, and wish him a happy new year.
  • My DH also had job interviews all last summer. I hated every second of it for him. He would put in a lot of time doing their online application, sending all this documentation that they required, and interviewing multiple times only to never hear a thing.

I have a background in sales, and if I treated my clients the way some companies treat prospective employees, I wouldn't have a job. The lack of follow-up is appalling. A couple of jobs offers came after my DH had accepted his current job. They missed out on a great employee by not communicating efficiently. How hard is it to send a mail merge letter or an e-mail?!
  • My instinct is that you are still in the running for the position (and are most likely a top candidate), but they have internal hoops to jump through that are taking longer than anticipated.  I actually think the fact that you haven't gotten the blow off email is a positive thing.  I've seen so many times within my own company, the hiring process gets skewed due to HR negotiations, multiple levels of approvals, etc.  I think it's a shame he hasn't at least responded to say he received your message and you will hopefully hear from him again soon, but I have seen too many times employers not returning calls until they have concrete information to share.  I wouldn't not trust this employer, I think sometimes it's the unfortunate nature of the beast.  Good news is I think this still has a very good chance of working out for you  Good luck!

  • Thanks all.  Just this afternoon, I finally heard back from the organization because they want me to do a Skype interview with the outside agency this role oversees, so I am happy about that.  We'll see what happens.  I have been so worried but at least I feel like I have another shot to prove myself.
