Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Possible Language Delay

I have 8 month old b/b twins.  They were born healthy at 38 weeks.  Everything has been going along great until lately when I've been worried about a possible language delay.  One of them cooing a lot.  He's constantly making noise but he hasn't done any consonant sounds.  The other twin doesn't even coo.  He likes blowing bubbles and making noise with his lips but he doesn't babble or coo at all.  My four year old was definitely doing that by this age.  The twins haven't had any delays to this point.  Is this something I should be concerned about?

TIA!

Re: Possible Language Delay

  • Are they physically active? If so, they not be verbal because they are focusing on movements right now.

  • My 3 year old didn't babble at all until the day before she turned 9 months.  She had her first word by 10 months.  It's way too early to be worried.

  • Do they react to voices and noises?  Aside from a hearing issue which can result in lack of typical language development (cooing etc) it is too early to be worried about baby not making consonant sounds etc.  But, it is worthwhile bringing up with the doctor just to flag any issues like hearing etc.  Children do typically follow a pattern in language development (as you obviously know based on the words you used) but there is great variation in when and where children are at.  If they deviate greatly then it could be a red flag so is worth keeping an eye on.

  • My LO just turned 9 months. At 8 months she just squeals and 8.5 she made a ton of consonants one week. Now she doesn't do the consonants anymore and just spits. I think it's too early to be worried also. I would just keep doing language rich activities- reading, playing games, talking in short phrases for them to understand, all those sort of things.

My DD tests super low on the speech part of the questionnaire we get at her well child check ups. My DH finds it amusing Because I'm a speech therapist.
  • My mother often tells me that I didn't babble at all as a baby but went straight to sentences. I was way behind for the first year then way ahead after that. Just like learning to crawl or walk, there are many different routes to the same destination.
  • DD is 8 months and while she's been ahead on a lot of developmental things she's still just babbling with no real words or attempts at words.  She is hearing 2 languages regularly (english and spanish) and I read an article that this can delay speech.  I'm not worried.  The doc says she's fine and she'll start talking when she wants to.
  • My son is 7.5 months and only makes vowel sounds, no consonants. I'm not worried yet :-)
