Comfort nursing and burping

So we're doing our fair share of comfort nursing in the evenings to keep us from going crazy. But when we try to do some light burping afterwards, it always wakes LO and starts the vicious rock star party hours all over again. Anyone have any tips? We're gentle and do it in a dimly lit, quiet space. I often contemplate not burping at all after comfort nursing.

  • Can you just snuggle w a paci after a feeding? I have to burp after every feeding bc of reflux.

  • I wish. Unfortunately, pacis are a no go in our home. We've tried three brands with no luck. Sometimes he'll go to town on his fingers, but only if we're lucky!

  • A lot of bf babies don't need to burp. The LCs told me and I read to try to burp between breast and if she falls asleep after the second, just let her sleep. Unfortunately my DD wakes up 20 minutes later and NEEDS to burp. However burping doesn't wake her. You could try swaddling and burping him gently do that it's like patting him to sleep. Good luck, sounds tricky.

  • Maybe instead of waiting for the final pull off of the one breast, wait for the first initial pull-off (like during let down)?

If we don't let LO burp and allow 10-20min.in a sitting position, the results become "the infamous spit up spill of 2013"...its only a few tbsp yes, but man it comes out of her nose...her mouth....

  • When LO is comfort nursing and comes off/falls asleep I just sit him up against me and rub his back.  He's burped a few times doing that- but by that point he hasn't usually taken much in since his last burp.  I just keep him upright for a while so he doesn't spit up as much.

  • My baby is bf and needs burped a lot. She gets bad gas built up in her tummy if she doesn't burp. You can hear her tummy bubbling. I talked to her pediatrician about it yesterday and he said its very common for babies that are breast or bottle fed because of their immature digestive system. I have begun feeding her at a more upright angle to avoid extra air. Also, make sure there is no mucous in her nose, which makes it harder to breath, thus taking in big gulps of air when she can. My dr also said gas drops and gripe water will help her short term, but that burping is key. Good luck, I know it's difficult!
