Preemies

Will Soon Have Preemies

I'm 26 weeks 1 day with twins. I started leaking fluid late last night but chalked it up to sitting too long and then standing. Well it happened at work today multiple times. 15 minutes after using the bathroom, I had leaked through my underwear and pants. I went to L&D and tested positive for amniotic fluid and therefore a water broke. I'm on magnesium to prolong labor as much as we can and was given a steroid shot to help the babies lung development. I'm in the hospital until they make their appearance which will be sooner rather than later. I would appreciate thoughts, prayers, support, and positive stories as proceed/enter this journey!

Our Fighter Anna born early 1/8/13 at 26 weeks
Hoping to bring home #3 due 9/9/15
  • T&Ps! I ruptured at 28 and 4, so I know how scary and NOT FUN this is -- I made it 6 days longer...long enough for two rounds of mag and the steroid shots. However, DD1 had all sorts of other plans for escape (let's just say her personality has held true outside of the womb).

Prayers that your LOs bake MUCH longer!

  • @nblondheim another March twins momma here! I'm 25 weeks today, and I'm freaking out just a bit because my first DS was born at 27 weeks and I'm really hoping to keep these little ones baking longer than he did.

I remember very well how scary it can be with a little one in the hospital, but my DS is almost 3 and is doing wonderfully! Good luck to you and your LOs - hope the mag helps fend labour off for a while yet! Take it as easy as you can!!

  • Hang in there...mag is both a gift and the devil drug. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your LOs at this time. The only advice I can give you is start doing your research. You are going to be your babies' best advocate!! Good luck!
  • There really isn't a whole lot to update! I was having contractions on and off today on the monitor and actually feeling them. Due to this, they upped my magnesium which hasn't been too much fun! I've been leaking since I got here...sometimes it's more than others times. I'm on IV antibiotics. I got my second steroid shot. We are basically just playing the waiting game.

Have they given you Nifedipine (Procardia) to try to stop the contractions? If not, I would suggest asking about it because I have heard that some OBs don't use it but in some cases it can be really effective. I remember the nurse having me sit up so that she could get a blood pressure reading that was high enough for me to be allowed a second dose of it.

They haven't given me Procardia but are giving me magnesium to stop contractions. Thank you for the heads up and I will definitely be keeping that in mind!!!

  • I checked out your blog -- and my story is so so similar! We never knew who ruptured, either, since fluid levels continued to look good for both -- but, after they were born, it was clear that DD1 ruptured since she fared SO well in the NICU -- they assumed she was under more stress during that final week in utero, which helped hasten development of her lungs, etc.

That mag is nasty stuff -- I remember was an amazing feeling it was to come off it and be allowed to shower (that was Halloween, in my case!) ;)

We are having a more in depth ultrasound tomorrow with the perinatalogist and that may tell us who ruptured. They are also wondering if it is just a small hole/leak as I never gushed and it's been pretty minimal which would be awesome as we will probably last longer if that is the case! I did fairly well with the mag which is surprising but I am glad. It is very nice to be off of it and to be able to get up to use the bathroom, shower, etc.! Our next big goal is 28 weeks.... only 10 days away!!! :) After that...we are moving on to 32 weeks! Thanks for checking out our blog and sharing your story! I really appreciate it!!!!

We actually did our tour of the birthing center and they did take us through the NICU a few weeks before and it did help. They have an awesome NICU and I was very impressed. Thank you for the healthy and happy thoughts....they are much appreciated!

  • I went into the hospital at 26 weeks, 2 days with a shortened cervix and lasted at 28 weeks, 2 days.  My twins weighed 2-5 and 2-6 when they were born and spent 8 weeks and 10 weeks in the NICU.  They are now happy, healthy 10 month olds.  The journey is long but modern medicine is amazing.  Best wishes and stay away from Google!
