Falls in pregnancy - any advice? I took tumble off bicycle today :(

I ride a bike to work, Doc said it was fine to until I feel too unbalanced/uncomfortable.

This morning I was signalling to turn left, had eye contact with a pedestrian who paused on kerb so I went around....but she kept walking across the road!!  I chose to screech on brakes and met the pavement/bike for my trouble. Unfortunately my stomach landed hard on the handlebars/wheel. I've grazed both palms, my knee and got decent bruises coming up on my thigh, shin, stomach and upper abdomen. I've fallen of before, but never landed on my tummy before.

Assuming baby is all ok as still in pelvis at 9.5 weeks?? I have my first scan on Monday, but goodness I was in shock. I cried afterwards which I don't normally do - yay hormones! Don't think I'll call Doc as not much they can do?

Anyone else had falls before in pregnancy? Thoughts? This is my first so I'm a bit lost!

I think I'll be on the bus sooner than expected :(

  • I would think you'd be fine. I'm the clumsiest person ever and have taken lots of falls in early pregnancy. It can't hurt to just call and check in with your doctor if you're worried.
  • I agree. Things are probably fine but I would call. And be careful, I too am clumsy, lol.
  • I would give a call just to be on the safe side.

  • Aw poor thing - I would call your doc just in case but I am sure that all is fine! Good for you for keeping up your bike commute though - I just recently stopped but only because it's too damn cold!

  • I am sure you are fine but never hurts to call. I fell down an entire flight of stairs while carrying my three year old a week and a half ago. Dr said no way it did anything to the baby they are so well protected right now. Sure did hurt thought! Feel better!

  • Echoing what everyone else said, I would call your doctor & see what they have to say.

  • You and baby are good. Unless you took a direct hit to the uterus....baby is to small right now to notice. Call your Dr to ease your mind. I fell on the ice at 7 months with dd, I cried hysterically, went to the er and demanded an us......she was fine but worried momma was not.

  • Thanks ladies! I'm off to doc tomorrow morning so they can confirm all ok.

Cookie a whole flight of stairs? My goodness! Glad you are ok and thanks for sharing!

BzBear I'm in Australia so its warm this time of year. I don't like riding in the cold either and we don't have proper winter like you guys!

    Thanks again everyone.
  • Sparks I only just saw yours. Wow, I would have been a mess with a fall at 7months too. Glad both she and you were ok!

Seriously! We just got a snowstorm and I saw a guy riding to work and the tires on his bike were huge! Like half as wide as my car tires.

  • My mother took me to NYC when I was pregnant with DS to see Newsies.  We went just before the "no flying" cut off, so I was clearly pregnant.  I was "that girl" wearing wedges who took a dive in the middle of Times Square.  Awesome.
  • I fell and rolled down a hill at like 7.5 months pregnant with DD and didn't call my OB and got reamed for it by my nurse. She told me that any time you are pregnant and you have a significant fall you should call the doc. For that reason alone I would call.

Having said that I'm sure your babe is fine nestled down in your pelvis!

  • Hubby and  I were just in a bad car accident on Thanksgiving and airbags went off and everything and I went to the emergency room and got a couple different ultrasounds done and baby was still fine with good heartbeat, so I'm guessing you'd be okay too, but if it worries you at all, it wouldn't hurt to get it checked out as well

I too was in a car accident and my airbags deployed when I was pregnant with DS1. I was 10 weeks along. When I called my OB and she felt if I wasn't bleeding or in unexpected pain (my back, neck and shoulder hurt pretty bad but no abdominal cramping) that baby was well protected at that point of the pregnancy. I hope your appointment goes well.
  • Update:
OB had a prod around and was happy everything is ok, he agreed it was good to come in to check. Sounds like while baby is highly unlikely to get impacted this early on, since our bodies are changing so much (including increase blood supply), any falls can do more damage to Mum than normal.

I won't lie, it was also very comforting to hear a professional say its all ok!

Seems we are a clumsy/accident prone lot, especially at 7 months. Is that because you get unbalanced most then?

  • Glad to hear you are ok

  • pregnancy clumsiness is actually clinical - the hormones meant to relax our joints for labor so baby can "fit" through our hips make us feel looser and therefore klutzier.

That plus by the time of 7+ months that pregnant belly kinda throws off your center of gravity.

Did not know this was a clinical thing, but it explains a lot. I have loose joints anyway and by the time 7 months came around with ds my right hip would not stay in socket causing severe pain. I spent many days laying in bed bawling my eyes out. OP glad all is ok!
