24 month speech?

I haven't posted in a while so I will give a short background: My dd was born at 31 weeks and we just celebrated her 2nd birthday. She has a 2 year checkup in 2 weeks and she has always been behind in speech, but she was not accepted in early on because she need to fail in other categories in order to qualify. At 15 months her pedi was concerned but wanted to re-evalutate her on her 18 month checkup. She went in at 19 months (they wanted her to be seen by a surgeon before she returned, for a dif issue) and she could not say 15 dif words. So it was left with let's see how she is on her 24 month apt. My question is: Should she be saying 2 or more word phrases? I know she should but being 9 weeks early is this going to be a concern? I know she is behind compared to her friends who are younger than her, she only says single words and only repeats the last word of what you say and her friends will sing songs, speak in 3-4 word phrases and count. I guess I am looking to see where your child was speech wise at 24 months.

Re: 24 month speech?

  • I know by the time my son hit 24 corrected (27 months actual) he blew my mind by saying 'I want it the elevator door open now'. Before that it had been 3-4 words max. He was born at 27 weeks. If you're worried about it, I'd definitely look into help options. Early intervention makes a huge difference!

  • Both my twins (28 weeks) have speech delays. They were only saying 15 or less words at 24 mo. It wasn't until about 26-27 mo that the language really increased. Now one is at least at 50+ words which is the point where they should be linking 2 words together. He's almost there but not quite. I would probably go ahead a try to at least get an evaluation from early intervention if you are concerned. However a lot of kid's really start talking after their 2 year birthday.
