running out of veggie options

I'm running out of ideas on what types of single veggies I can give to S as a puree! So far she's had green beans, peas, carrots, sweet potato and zucchini. If I can find some pre-cubed butternut squash she'll be getting that along with white potatoes this week as well. I can't think of any other veggies that I can give her though. She still doesn't swallow most of her food (fruits or veggies) so we're still only giving her an ounce per "meal". I was thinking that I could start to mix her veggies together, but figured I'd see if there were any other veggies I should try first.

For those of you who have/are doing purees, what other veggies have you tried?

Re: running out of veggie options

  • I've given my LO all the ones you listed including squash, parsnips and avocado.

  • Is there a reason you need pre-cubed squash? I've just been roasting whole butternut and acorn squash and using a hand blender.

You could always do fruits too if you are running out of veggies.

  • @amcongdon - pre-cubed because I'm too lazy to de-seed and roast the squash. We're doing fruits as well, but we're trying to keep a pretty good balance between fruits and veggies. we've still got quite a few more fruits we can try so I'm not worried about her fruit options, we just don't want to end up feeding her only fruits and getting a sweet tooth because we've run out of veggies for her to try.

  • we've done avocado (I consider that a fruit). can you puree broccoli? The guidebook thingy I have says broccoli and cauliflower are closer to 8-10 months. I don't know why I'm following that though haha.

  • Spinach, Kale, Turnips, parsnips, pumpkin(can constipate), Bok choy, beets, also try different lentils I know they aren't veggies but they are super healthy.

When in doubt go to the store and check out what mixes of baby foods they sell then just buy those veggies.

This. I go to the gerber or earthbest websites and see what they offer and then buy the veggies and make it myself.

  • I have a puree cook book. You can also try cauliflower and corn. It's for 6-7 months.

  • @crazycoffeegirl I'm like you so I just get the butternut squash whole cut in half and roast upside down seeds and all in the oven then you just scoop out. It's easier than pre-cubed chunks.

You could try peas and sweetcorn. Maybe add in some pulses like black beans which are an excellent source of protein for them.

  • I'm actually an early June mom, so we just started solids. He loves butternut squash, and it's really not that hard to deseed if you can't find it pre-cubed. Some of the veggie options you haven't done yet like asparagus, beets, cauliflower, eggplant, cucumber, regular potatoes, and broccoli are best done at eight months or later, but you could always try them a little early. I really like this site for food ideas:

    https://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/

It's for people who make their own food, but even if you buy, it could still give you some ideas. It tells you what the appropriate age for each food is.
  • I find that website a little out of date with it's guidelines. It is a great website but a lot of doctors now say there is no reason to hold off on potential allergen foods. Which means the vegetables you listed are likely totally fine to give your 6 month old.

  • Do any of you have kids who are easily constipated?  I'm struggling to find veggies that will work for him.  M loves sweet potato and butternut squash but they bind him up.  So far spinach is the only non-fruit that seems to be ok.  Any others that seem to work?

I agree. At the class we went to they said anything and everything is fair game at 6 months as long as they are ready for the texture based on their development. The only things she said to hold off on are honey and berries unless you peel off the seeds because they basically go down the wrong pipe. Oh and citrus fruits are too acidic.

Their reasoning for most of these being 8-10 months wasn't based on being allergens, though. It said that sometimes they cause digestive issues and gassiness in younger babies, so that's why you might want to wait a little longer.
  • Sweet potatoes!! My LO is crazy about them!
