Babies: 3 - 6 Months

introducing solids

So we tried peas today- CLEARLY the cereal and lentils were a much bigger hit!!   So, do I try peas again tomorrow and the next day or wait 3 days and try something else? Either way I'll try peas again at a later time but he definitely didn't like them today.

Re: introducing solids

  • I've read that you should give your baby a food 10 times before you determine if they like it. So you figure after about 3-4 days you will know if they care for it or not.  We started solids about a week ago and we did peas for 4 days. He ate them but now that we moved onto green beans, I noticed he eats up the green beans much better than peas. I plan on trying peas again just to see if he really didn't care for them.

Okay so maybe I will try tomorrow and next day.... apparently you need to wait 3 days to see if they are allergic before trying something new but I wasn't sure if I should get him to try it again tomorrow and the next day or just wait till later. thanks!

I think it's a range between 4-6 months. I think 6 is the "new" recommendation but my doctor cleared us at our 4 month appt. saying DS was good to go but he wouldn't argue if we choose to wait.

  • I've been told that you need 3 days for each new food just for allergy reasons. That way, if your child has an allergic reaction, you know exactly what it is from. My DD is 4 months and we just started cereal feedings. She liked it so much that instead of doing it once a day, we have gone up to twice a day. It has been 4 days of cereal and she is loving it. Do you think I should stick with just the cereal or should I start other foods? How old is your DS?

@baby54124 My DS is 6 months in 1.5 weeks and has also been on cereal since 4 months- he also LOVES it. 6 months is the guideline for solids but I had a very hard time not giving him anything else other than cereal sooner because he has been sitting up very well for months and has been eye balling every single thing that goes near our mouths, he reaches for our water bottles and every bit of food we eat. I felt like I was depriving him of trying something else and since he has done so well on the cereals I decided not to wait another 10 days!   Should you start other foods earlier? I dunno... I might wait if I were you (wait a minute, I did, lol) As far as I understand cereal is pretty easy to digest and other foods might not be... You could also check with DD doc to see what they say.

  • TY for the advice! Its crazy how fast she grasped eating with a spoon! I couldn't believe it! I think I will wait until at least 5 months and then see what her pedi says. She is definitely a bigger baby being in the 97th percentile for height and weight. She too has been sitting up extremely well and watches us like a hawk as we eat. She is even mimicking opening her mouth while we open ours to eat! It is cute but I feel like I am depriving her! lol

  • @baby54124 that's exactly how my LO is!! And has been, for what seems likes weeks and weeks!  I was also very surprised at how well he took to the spoon and mimics us. My baby is the opposite though, is in the 25th. He's long and lean. Your girl will likely be ready before 6m by the sounds of it!  Have you tried giving her a cup yet? For expressed milk or formula? I was amazed at how well he did with a cup! A regular kids cup. So that's what he has every time we have cereal, a cup of milk on the side :) And we've started a straw cup too (playtex) for water...he's working on it.  Where I live they are recommending we skip the sippy cups all together except for travel and just teach straws and regular cups I just thought it was amazing how well he did with the cup on the first try.
