February 2014 Moms

VBAC thoughts?

So I did post a more detailed comment on the VBAC board, but I'm curious if there are any other feb14 moms who are going to try & VBAC or if any of you have at a hospital? I'm trying to prepare as much as possible, but I'm wondering if anyone had some tips & tricks to a successful VBAC without many or any interventions?
So far I'm relying on our Bradley classes we took with our first, joining a local VBAC support group, hiring a doula with experience at VBACS & just trying to educate myself.

Re: VBAC thoughts?

  • No tips or tricks, but I'm also hoping for a vbac this time!

  • I'm going for a VBAC! I got exciting news last week... They may let me go to 41 weeks! I know many hospitals will not. I find out for sure next week.

  • Ditto!!! Crossing my fingers for a VBAC.. Everyone thinks I'm nuts but I want to experience it!
And my Dr is giving me til 41 weeks but they are scheduling a c sec date anyways for I think 41 weeks and 1 day? Ugh. I hate timelines :(
My sister has 2 and I asked her an she said she chose a VBAC (first c sec was mandatory) just because lol. She said she didnt want to push and wanted to be prepared for the baby and know when she was gonna come. To each their own I guess lol
But BOTH her kids came earlier than the scheduled date lmao

I had a VBA2C w c/s. The key for me was really having a supportive OB. Eventhough she ended up not being on call when I had DS, and another dr delivered me, she called me every night to see how things were going, tell me who was on call, how conservative they were, etc. She really helped influence my mental state that I could do this. The risk of a third c/s was statistically more risky than what I ended up accomplishing-- hearing that from a board certified OB was very reassuring.

Also, I tried to be as active as possible towards the end, and did a LOT of squatting. I didn't have an exercise ball at home, so I would sit on this low cushion thing. Also, after talking with another friend, she had been told that if you were going to get an epi, that you were less likely to stall out if you didn't get it until 6 cm. My contrax were insanely intense, due to the scarring tissue, so I asked for the demerol, then after my water was broken at 5-6 cm, I quickly went into transition, and had the epi placed sometime around then. Our hospital does the walking version, so that you can still move around more, which is really key, IMO. W DD I couldn't move at all, I was frozen numb.

Feel free to pm me if you'd like!

  • @calimama2007 Thank-you! I am really excited to give it a try. I am trying to be as active as possible as well. Working out twice a week at least. I didnt have an epi with my first, so my goal is to not with this one either. But like you mentioned about scar tissue, I don't know how that's going to feel. So your idea about waiting as long as possible is a really good idea. Thank-you!
  • NP!

I felt compelled to mention that, bc with this labor, I was screaming so loudly that my OB could hear me :on the phone: down the hall, bc she was calling to check on me! lol!

I asked her about that after b.c it was so crazy intense, and I hadn't experienced that w DD (got epi at first possible second barely 4 cm), and she said it was because of the two prior c/s scars, AND DS was 9 lbs 7.5 oz and posterior. So obviously those are individual circumstances, but I felt like that goal was really helpful for me personally :) Good luck!!!!!

  • I'm trying for a VBAC and have high hopes for success, since I'll be delivering at a German hospital where VBACs are very accepted. They will let me go 12 days past my due date before they try gentle/homeopathic induction methods.

I'm doing a lot of yoga, squats, and inversions to make sure baby is in an optimal position (DS1 was sunny side up, NOT FUN), and have already started with daily cups of red raspberry leaf tea. I'll also do evening primrose oil as it gets closer and acupuncture if I go past my due date.

  • I just found out recently that my hospital now allows them but I'm not planning on trying as this would be VBA2C for me. That said, I am more concerned this time about my surgery risks since I've been so sick this pregnancy. I must admit the thought is more appealing than ever.

Honestly, one of my big reasons for considering a VBAC is after experiencing the c/s & two other abdominal surgeries I have no desire to go through surgery again. I hate the recovery and throwing a LO & a NB into the mix on top of surgery just doesn't appeal to me. I'm realistic, that stuff happens, but if I don't have to be cut open again I'd rather not be.
  • I am up in the air w this! I didnt even know it was an option until my last hospital stay! I have had 2 vaginal And then 2 CS.. First c was because DS3 was breech and then my incision while in labor w DD was "thin" on one side ( I was getting knife like pains w each contraction) ANYWAYs when I had my scare a few weeks ago the doctor down at the hospital said that I was a candidate for a vba2c especially since I am 100% effaced already and have had 2 succseful vag deliverys. Now there was conflicting report from the other resident who seemed to think that the only reason I was not dialating was because of the large amount of scar tissue from my LEEP and that I would probably "fail to progress" and end up w the c like I originally thought was my only option.... One of the nurses suggested that inserting evening primrose capsules can break up or soften the scar tissue and sometime manual massaging can help dialate when in labor... My issue is given my history delivering at all 4 kids at 35 weeks I do not want to do anything to speed up the process... But if at 35 weeks I go into labor and do "fail to progress" ill have a c section anyways. Anyone have any success dialating after a LEEP and previous c and successfully deliver vaginally? I have a doc apt fri so all questions ill try and remember to bring up :)
