Babies: 9 - 12 Months

baby waking more and more at night?

Hi,

I have not been on FOREVER, but had a question and know you ladies are always good for helping out another mommy. My son will be 6 months on the 4th of Jan and he was STTN but in the past few weeks is waking up more and more. Most of the times he wants to eat, but sometimes he just wants to be awake. We keep the room dark and don't talk to him or play, but I am just wondering why he is waking up again after sttn. It has been  a few weeks now so I don't think it's a growth spurt. He gets up at least once, but twice most nights. What should I do? Anybody have this same issue? He has a bedtime routine (bath, bottle, bed) that we have stuck to since he was a few weeks old.

 TIA!

Re: baby waking more and more at night?

  • It could be teething, working on new developments, or many other things. Babies can also get so distracted during the day that they don't take in enough calories, and then make up for it at night.

  • My dd was waking up a million times a night (well, maybe it just seemed like a million, probably more like 10-20) between 5-6.5 months.  We eventually did ferber.

  • Try to determine if there's a reason, and then figure out how you want to address it.

DS was a great sleeper then we had a succession of new skills, teeth, two colds.  Now he's in the habit of getting to nurse  every time he wakes up - which is every freaking sleep cycle at times (so about every 1-2 hours).

I'm cool with him waking up multiple times a night, but we are working on getting him to sleep at least 4 hours at a stretch because I'm going to go cooky.

We are using the Dr. Jay Gordon night weaning plan, but only asking DS to sleep for 4 hour stretches - not 7.  We've done it for 4 nights and things are getting better.

The fact that I only slept 2 hours last night was my own damn fault.

  • I have nothing for you, but I'm in the same boat. DS was up at least 6 times last night, 3 of the times he wanted to eat and he was up at 6am for the day. He has never STTN, but he never used to wake up THIS much.
