Can we talk about sitting again?

I know this has been discussed a few times, but G had her 6 month appointment this morning. Our doctor has referred her to a physiotherapist because she is quite concerned that she can't sit unassisted.

I'm not the only one with a 6 month old who isn't sitting yet.....am I? I thought there were quite a few in the last thread.

I think my doctor is going a little overboard, no?

Re: Can we talk about sitting again?

  • that seems a bit much, our doctor didnt even ask about sitting at our 6 month appointment which was about a week after his 6 month birthday, just if he was rolling over yet. When I mentioned he was sitting (and had JUST started right after turning six months) she seemed surprised and said "good job"

  • Yeah I thought sitting was a 7 month milestone. I mean if she still doesn't have good head control or showing some kind of physical issue then I'd look into a specialist. You know the moment you leave their office she'll start sitting like a pro.
  • Our pedi did ask about sitting at our 6 month appointment but with our baby it was like one day she was falling over and using her hands as a tripod to sit and the next day she just got it and can sit unassisted. It can literally be overnight. I think I would wait a couple of weeks and see what happens. Is your baby in daycare? Can you encourage them to practice there?
  • that seems a little weird to me. When we took S in for her 6 month appt (it was actually more like 6.5 months), our pedi commented that she sits up better than most of the 6 month olds he sees, so I don't think it's "standard" for them to be sitting up up on their own by the time they're 6 months old. He did seem surprised though that she refuses to roll over...she's skipping that one I'm sure of it.

  • My LO sat at 5.5 months unassisted, but my niece didn't until 7 months... She rolled over, and my son has only rolled over 3 times.. I think your dr is jumping the gun a bit... babies develop at their own rate, and on the check list (I live in Canada) we get at our 6 month appt it says "sitting with assistance" I can't see that big of a difference between Canadian babies and American babies....  :-?

  • Yikes! I hope that that is a bit drastic because my little Em is not sitting up unassisted and he is about 6 1/2 months. His appt. is tomorrow, so Ill see what the ped says, but I havent been too concerned about it. He'll get there when he gets there.

  • My LO does not sit yet. The dr did not ask if he could at his 6 month appt.

  • My lo can't sit unassisted yet either. He just turned 6 months. I think your ped is overreacting a bit.

  • Mine can sit. Her doctor was very impressed that she can sit at 6m and said it's more of a 7 or 8m milestone.

Same here. She was surprised she sits up from crawling position too. I also thought that was 7-8 month thing?

  • I'd say it's a bit much unless they noticed some other reason to send her.  I still have a floppy baby.
  • We are one week shy of six months, and sitting is hit or miss still. Sometimes she'll stay up for almost a minute, and sometimes she faceplants.

I think it's a bit early for that kind of reaction by your doctor--unless she is seeing something else to go along with thst concern.

Hmmm. That's kinda what I thought. I'm really surprised.

She is rolling both ways, and pulling herself along on the floor. The problem is when I put her in sitting position she's so obsessed with her feet that she goes for them, or tries to get down to the floor to roll around. She's all like "ain't nobody got time for that" when it comes to sitting.

Funny @bhjones1980, my doctor actually was asking and kind of made a big deal about rolling at LO's 4 month appt. so I think she's a little off on her milestone expectations.

@theycalledherkate She's still home with me. We do practice and use a nursing pillow but I'll have to work at it a bit more I guess.

I'm actually in Canada as well @adamscowgurl

  • We aren't rolling but are sitting - doctor says he was surprised she was sitting an not concerned about the rolling... Seems a bit much about the physiotherapist...
  • My LO is 6.5 months and not sitting unassisted. He also goes straight for his feet and tumbles to the side. He is crawling everywhere though....

  • Our pedi just said that babies do things at different paces and didn't seem concerned at all.

  • My nephew is 9 months and still not sitting. His pedi apparently isn't concerned, which I think is weird because by 9 months he should definitely be sitting... But yeah, I think your pedi is definitely going overboard about it at 6 months. I wouldn't stress about it.

Not sitting yet either. Not particularly concerned about it. Physiotherapy seems a but much to me just for that.

  • My baby is sitting and started to crawl a few days ago, but I have a friend who has a 7.5 month old that still doesn't sit unassisted. It'll come in its own time. If LO is 8+ months and not sitting, I would be concerned then.

  • When my pedi walked it the door LO was sitting on my lap. And the first thing he said was "almost doing that all on your own!" I said yea, he usually just goes to his belly and the doc said "don't worry, it's a 7 mo skill." LO sees a PT for torticollis and she's not concerned about his lack of sitting either.

  • DD 6 months and 2 weeks today and she still isn't sitting unassisted. She holds her head up great, rolls both ways and is even trying to crawl but can't sit without support. Like everyone else, I think your Ped is over reacting. Most things I've read say it's a 7 month milestone.

  • I've read that anywhere from 6-8 months is norml and for what it's worth T is 7 months and only sits a couple minutes and flops over and rolls around.

  • Lex sits unassisted (like others have said, it happened practically overnight), and scoots around the floor, but still doesn't roll. So, there you have it.
