Make-up Post!

After slightly hijacking the Black Friday thread to talk about Urban Decay Naked pallettes, I figured a makeup post would be fun.  So, what's your must haves and what do you need recommendations on?

I always used eyelid primer, I've found the elf is the best (and cheapest).  I also can't live without my MAC concealer and Black Honey Almost Lipstick by Clinique.

I need recs for skin cream, I was using a bottle of Lancome Premier bx that my step-mom gave me, and I loved it so I looked it up online to get another bottle...it's $155.  I need something for super dry, red skin that is affordable (less than $75).

I also ned recs for foundation, now that I have some lovely pregnancy rosacea I need a little more coverage than my BB cream.

  • OOOO I love make-up, but I primarily wear Mary Kay.
I love their concealer, I go through it rather quickly because I like the coverage it gives, and it's only $10! I like their Mineral Powder for my foundation.

The only thing that ever really covered my rosacea was BareMinerals, but because I also have super dry skin that got scaly with the rosacea, I'd have to mix it with moisturizer first (I used Dr. Hauschka Quince or Rose day cream, which is pricey, but sooo nice). Otherwise it actually makes the dryness look worse.

The best thing I ever did for the rosacea was get an Rx for Finacea... now it's no longer embarrassing and I don't feel like I need to cover it up. Also with super sensitive skin, the best thing to do is use as few products as possible, so aside from special occasions I don't use anything other than wash, Finacea, and moisturizer most days. And I even stopped using the expensive moisturizers... I mostly just use a little bit of virgin coconut oil at night.

But I don't wear much makeup unless I'm going to a wedding or something. So usually my go to is Aveda mascara and some sort of lip gloss, if I'm wearing anything at all.

  • My faves:

    Foundation-- make up forever HD
    Mascara-- Christian Dior
    Eyeliner pens by Nars
    The urban decay naked palettes
And Christian Dior makes a really sheer gloss that is great (Glow?)

  • I randomly stumbled upon Victoria secret bronzer and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. The color is perfect. I use that instead of foundation, so easy.

Also, I've stopped using eye liner. I have a black eye shawdow and a crease brush and I apply just like eyeliner. It goes on so smooth and is already semi smokey. I just have to go easy because if I apply too much it dusts onto my cheeks... Not a good look
  • I use make up forever forever matte foundation...stays on all day with great coverage. Benefit They're real mascara...amazing!! @dotgirl I highly recommend trying it...it doesn't flake or run at all!! Nars orgasm blush. Bare minerals eye shadow. Op talk to a dermatologist before forking over that kind of money! Chances are they can prescribe something covered by insurance that'll be more effective and only cost you your normal co-pay.
  • I used to be a corporate retail buyer and one of my areas of responsibility was color and treatment (or make-up and skin care for all the lay folk).  I miss the samples but not the work.  I have favorites across different brands.

    concealer - Bobbi Brown
foundation - usually Chanel for light coverage, Lauder for heavy coverage
    mascara - dior or chanel
    blush - mac
    shadows - chanel
    lip gloss - chanel
lipstick - chanel for creamy, mac for color staying power

I have to say, even though I've never used it, every time I've commented on how nice my mom's skin is looking it turns out she's wearing Chanel foundation... so there must be something to that.

  • I love love love Katie B Cosmetics. She's a dear friend of mine who did my wedding hair and makeup, and is a celebrity makeup artist. If you order $50+ today, you get a free gift. I LOVE LOVE LOVEEEE all of her products except for her brushes (shhh don't tell her). www.katiebcosmetics.com Shipping is SUPER fast. Like 2 days.

Other must-haves are MAC's blacktrack, Sigma brushes (just like MAC, but WAY cheaper), St. Tropez mousse tanning foam (expensive...but WORTH IT!!!!!), and if you're looking for Lancome-like stuff but not the price, Premier Dead Sea anything on Amazon is way cheaper than in the malls and JUST as good.

I've never had rosacea before, I'm hoping that it will go away after the baby is born, so I'm hesitant to go to the dermatologist to get a prescription cream.  It's not horribly bad and seems to have gotten better.

Bare Minerals does not work well with my skin, at least my pre-pregnancy skin.  It made me itch like crazy!

Dr. Hauschka is really nice, I totally forgot about that stuff, I'll look into it!

  • Avene is a french line that's geared toward sensitive skin. They sell it in the U.S. at various doctors offices or higher end spas. It's very affordable too. They have a redness relief line that's amazing. I'm sure you can buy it online.

For makeup I love Jane Iredale's pressed powder foundation and their full coverage BB cream.
  • Check out Clinique for some awesome moisturizers - they've even got a line to combat redness, though I e never used it. I use the superdefense day for the sunscreen coverage, and the moisturesurge is great too.

  • I love Nivea Creme for a moisturizer. I use it at night so it doesn't mess up my am routine. I use Make up Forever for a primer and foundation. Laura Mercier for a tinted moisturizer and mineral powder. MAC concealer. And Clinique for eye shawdow since it is sensitive to my eyes. I go for a pretty natural look though.

Avene was recommended by my dermatologist for my incredibly sensitive skin. I really like the body moisturizer and the spring water spray. I could live without the body wash.
  • @clo1982 - I HATED They're Real mascara. I took it back after a few uses. I guess everyone's needs are so different! It just didn't thicken like I like.

    My go to's:
Primers - (foundation) Smashbox, (eyes) Urban Decay Primer Potion
Foundation - StudioGear. I've been wanting to try Chanel though.
    Powder - Pur minerals
Blush - Depends on the season but I usually rotate Mac and Mary K
    Eyeliner - Lancome
Mascara - Buxom Lash. I like DiorShow too.
    Bronzer - BareMinerals warmth
Eyeshadow - Urban Decay Naked2 Palette is my FAV.
Lips - I stumbled on to the Urban Decay's lip glosses when I bought my palette and it came with a freebie. LOVE that stuff (and I'm usually not a gloss fan because it dries out my lips too much). I typically use the color "Naked" for day to day.

  • I use Prestige bronzer instead of foundation
St. Ives Collagen Elastin face moisturizer for super dry skin
    Urban Decay blush
Maybelline 24/7 concealer for under eyes
Benefit Light it up highlighting stick
And I am a mascara freak so I have a lot, I switch between Buxom Lash, Benefit, Too faced, Lorac and more. I love most of them.

I found that skipping foundation and focusing on skin care has greatly improved the look of my skin. Foundation used to make my skin look SO dry, but it looks a million times better just using a great moisturizer and simple cetapihil face wash bar.

  • Soap-Cerave
    Primer-Bare minerals
    Foundation-bare minerals ( :x mineral veil)
    Blush-Mac
    Eye primer-Mac
Mascara- Bare minerals or too faced better than sex

Mainly my B.Minerals foundation and primer are my must haves I'm flexy on the rest.

  • Foundation - make up forever HD (special occasions, full coverage but can be spread thinly for light coverage perfect weight!)

Face powder - compact shishedo (seriously crazy good for powder coverage without irritating my skin, bare minerals just didn't cut the mustard)

Foundation Primer - I use smash box green stuff because it tones down my redness, amazing during pregnancy

Mascara - I've found it really doesn't matter, so whatever is handy

Eyeliner - Mac or smashbox grease pod eyeliner (waterproof all day), finish with revlon liquid, because I love me some cat eye

Blush - Mac (I've had the same 2 for 3 years so its pricy but lasts forever)

Eyeshadow - assorted, long day or events urban decay eye potion. Spendy but so very worth it

  • There are some great products listed by you ladies.  Here are mine:
Primers - (foundation) Smashbox, (eyes) Benefit
Foundation - Makeup Forever HD.  Changed my life!  I used MAC for years and never had perfect skin.  I changed to MFHD and rarely have a pimple now.
    Blush - Benefit Dandelion
Eyeliner - Stila waterproof liquid liner (amazing), plus sometimes Benefit Bad Gal liner on top - depending on the look I want.
Mascara - Benefit Bad Gal Lash.  Used Lancome for a decade before switching, and love Benefit because it never flakes.
Bronzer - It's a stocking stuffer I got last year from the Body Shop.  I don't know what it is, but I'm going to be sad when it's gone.
Eyeshadow - Smashbox (various); love how they stay put and don't crack (even after a 12 hour day)
Lips - I don't have anything I love right now. I used to have a great red from NARS, but I used it all.  Need to go shopping!

Also, @BethSt - I shelled out the bucks for Lancome for years (and it was admittedly great for my skin), but then realized L'Oreal is owns them, and tried their Youth Code line and loved it.  It's much cheaper, and seems to get the job done.

  • Looks like I'm in the minority yet again. The majority of my makeup is Cover Girl. I'm cheap! If I wasn't so cheap though, I'd wear Bare Minerals!

  • I'd suggest everyone get a sample type set of mascara. You get somewhere near 10 mascaras for apx 45 $. You get to try out several. I promise you will see different results. Its nice to try out several and compare them with out purchasing several individual tubes.
-Benefit bad gal lash is amazing.

  • I love make-up and use mostly Chanel, Dior or Mac, currently.

However, I can never seem to get a concealer that will stay with me and that also doesn't look like I am a Kabuki dancer. I have to use the lightest because I am very fair. I also have pretty dark under eye circles...I have used, mac, nars, bobby brown, YSL, etc. Anyone have a concealer they love that actually stays put and covers dark circles?

I LOVE make up forever, however a Sephora is pretty far from where I live...

I don't wear a lot of make up, and if I do wear some it is very light.

Concealer - Make Up forever - but I rarely use it.
    Foundation - Bare Minerals
Blush - NARs - Organism and Deep throat :P
Mascara - Christian Dior or Clinque High Impact.
Eye Liner - Make up forever, Urban Decay
Eye Shadow - Urban Decay Naked Palette or others.

  • I love Mary Kay products. They have a variety of different lines and I like that you can try pretty much everything out before you buy it, plus have a satisfaction guarantee and can return things if they don't work out.

  • oh boy, now you've done it! I'm a product junkie and have tried just about everything on the market. a great site for rec's is makeupalley.com

For the record I have light combo skin which is super sensitive, bad circles under my eyes, and long but sparse eyelashes. I finally nailed down a routine which keeps my skin looking great (yay no breakouts anymore!!) and my makeup looking pretty but natural. Also, all of these products photograph very well! no white circles or orange face. Here it is, I hope it helps:

Evening: scrub face with washcloth and old-school tub of noxema in the shower, then wash again with Philosophy's Purity cleanser.

Morning: wash with Philosophy's Purity cleanser, use regular Cetaphil all-over moisturizer.

    MAKEUP:

Foundation-  Bobbi Brown Regular Tinted Moisturizer in Extra Light. (if you want heavier coverage, go with their Skin Foundation....it's fabulous and what I wore in my wedding pics below).

Concealer - Dior Diorskin Hydrating Concealer

Powder - Covergirl clean powder (I use color 205)

Blush - Clinique powder blush in Posy (you can go cheap on blush brands, just make sure it doesn't have too much shimmer or your pores will look huge)

Bronzer - anything without shimmer. I like Victorias Secret powder bronzers, although they keep changing the palette style. I brush it all over my face, and also my neck and chest as my skin is fairly uneven and this evens it all out.

eyeshadow - if you want more color / evening look, go for MAC powder shadows. for daytime, I like Clinique for pastels, and bobbi brown for my everyday look. I love bobbi browns cream shadows as either a primer or to wear on their own.

Liners - if you want a dark, stand-out line, go with bobbi brown gel eyeliner and use a brush to tightline as well (to learn how, check out youtube. it is awesome!). for a fast pencil line pre-work, I like Clinique and origins quickliner pencils.

Mascara - DIOR DIOR DIOR!! haha. you simply can't beat Dior's Diorshow mascara. I'm talking about the basic formula, in both regular and waterproof. simply perfect! I love the regular for everyday, and the waterproof for events. If you curl your lashes, the waterproof keeps the curl all day and night and looks like falsies. love it...can you tell?

  • I love any makeup from sephora. But w all the hormones, my face doesn't take to makeup well and it looks bad on me now lol. So I'm in the tinted moisturizer boat for the duration
