24 hour urine testing!!?!?

Has anyone else had to do a 24 urine analysis? I had really low creatin level in my urine sample at my 12 week appt last week, which caused my protein/creatin ratio to be elevated. So yesterday I had to catch all my urine in this container and pour it into a jug for 24 hours and I dropped it off at the lab this morning and they also took more bloodwork. I am HR so think my doc is being cautious b/c she said it was likely a fluke but just wanted to make sure. Has anyone else had this ever??? Now I'm nervous waiting for my test results, so was curious if this ever happened to anyone else. Thanks!

Re: 24 hour urine testing!!?!?

  • I did a 24hr urine catch twice when I was PG with DS. For me, it was because I was developing Preeclampsia. Fwiw, the 24 hr results were very different from the picture the dipstick showed. I hope this sorts it out for you, I know what a PITA they are.

  • I had excess protein in my urine once and had to do the 24 hour sample.  They were trying to figure out if my kidneys were okay since it is not normal to have protein in urine.  I did the the test and everything turned out fine.  They said sometimes you can spill extra protein in your urine if you are dehydrated or just getting over or just becoming sick with like a cold or something.  Mine was more likely that I wasn't drinking enough water.  I'd make sure you are getting enough fluids!  FX everything is okay!

  • Yep.  Did it last time, already did it this time (to establish a baseline for myself).  I have chronic high blood pressure, which is why I was one of the lucky ones.  I even did it at work - I was a pee ninja.

  • I did this a couple weeks ago! She wanted to check my kidney function cuz I only have one kidney that works! She said my protein levels were barely non exsistant and everything looked great. Its annoying and I hated going pee. But you do what you gotta do. I dont have to do it again unless my blood pressure gets too high
  • I have had it while not pregnant. It was annoying having to catch at work, LOL. It ended up being no big deal.

  • I have chronic kidney stones so I do a few 24 hour collections every year to make sure my medication is working right. I've had plenty of fluke things show up on them even outside of pregnancy and the follow up is fine. Good luck, hope its nothing.

I had to do one with my first pregnancy when I was having problems with high blood pressure.  It was gross and I had to keep it in the fridge.  One of my cousins asked if it was lemonade. haha (I was still living at home at the time).

This, exactly. Although, no one thought mine was lemonade! ;)
  • I did mine yesterday and finished this morning and dropped it off on the way to work. I have chronic hypertension and had pre-eclampsia with first 2 babies. Since I'm pregnant with twins they wanted to see what how my kidney function is now, they way if they think there's a problem later, they can do another 24 hr urine and compare the two so they know for sure if my kidney function is getting worse.

Ditto and I am doing it again this time around. Pregnancy is so glamorous!

  • I did it last week too, really no big deal.  They want to know if I have any protein in my urine now, and will test again at 30+ weeks (and compare to last week).

  • Thanks ladies! You made me feel better!!! I hope it's nothing too!! Hopefully I get my results back tomorrow!!
Lol @MegK82 that is hysterical about the lemonade! Ha ha ha
  • So I am due June 23 and was just given the jug yesterday for my 24 jr urine collection at my 18 week appt to collect sometime in the next week or two. I'm really nervous since I don't know much about Pre-eclampsia and I'm a FTM. She is having me test bc I have a history of high blood pressure although it hasn't been so high while pregnant. Any advice for this FTM to my worry? Is there anything I can do to prevent it??
  • Totally normal to do. Good dr just checking things out. Gives a more even look. U could have come to clinic dehydrated so this way they see the whole day.
  • They just want a baseline to compare to for the future, @rlblum711. You can't prevent pre-e but you can take medicine for your blood pressure and let your doctor know about any new symptoms. If they are keeping an eye on you then you are in good hands.

100% what @flerlgirl said - I had high blood pressure with my first pregnancy and had to do several urine collections - at delivery, even though I didn't have pre-eclampsia, they treated me as if I were.  It sucked, but I was happy to have such cautious doctors.

I've already done an initial 24-urine collection this time, and I'm due to do another before my next monthly appointment.  Try not to worry about it - you can always monitor your bp on your own if you want to be a little more proactive, and that way you can nudge your doctor if they seem to not be as proactive as you'd like (although they seem to be doing okay so far) - what has your bp been?

  • My bp was high before getting pregnant, but since I got pregnant it's lowered. Yesterday was 110/70. I do feel better knowing that my dr just wants to make sure everything is going to be ok. High blood pressure runs in my family too. I hope it turns out ok, just wanted to see if I was the only one doing this bc none of my friends or cousins have ever doing the urine analysis when they were pregnant. Thanks for the advice! I'm just a nervous FTM
  • I did it when I was pregnant with my son. It was super weird but everything turned out fine. Good luck!

It's hard not to worry about stuff like this! Just know that right now it sounds like you are doing fine :)
