XP: Anyone have/have had an IUD?

I got my Paraguard on May 1st and had no issues whatsoever with it. Fast forward to mid-October and my period started, no big deal, but then just didn't stop. It was heavy and really clotty. At the third week, I called my GYN. They tested for pregnancy (miscarriage), my blood cell count and iron levels-- all of which came back normal. She then gave me the Nuva Ring and said that the estrogen in the Nuva Ring would trigger the period to stop. I've used the Nuva Ring before.

It never stopped. It goes from being bright red and a normal flow to the brown, old blood. I never know what it's going to be on a daily basis and honestly... it's now December, and I am effing over having a period.

I think that this is an issue with the IUD and I'm wondering if anyone else who has or has had an IUD has experienced this. I'm going to call my GYN back this week about possibly getting it taken out. It's kind of ruining my sex life, honestly.

TIA

  • Sorry this is happening.  I have the Mirena and basically never have a period.  It is pretty awesome but I know it doesn't work that way for everyone.

  • That sounds really annoying.  I had the Paragard and my issue was different, but my body basically rejected it after it had been in place with no issues for close to a year.  I started having very painful labor-like cramps and the doctor said my body was trying to expel it.  Apparently some people just don't tolerate it well.  I would get it taken out if I were you.  Good luck!

  • I had the Mirena and had terrible periods on it. TERRIBLE! They were different in that they were still a normal length, but for those 5 days it was really really heavy. I had it in for almost 2 years and that never changed. I just had it taken out about a week ago because I have had no sex drive whatsoever for a long time. I had thought it was just related to having had a baby but researched and found a few places that it can change your sex drive. It's only been a week, and it might be all in my head, but the difference is night and day! I told my DH the other night that I could cry thinking about what I've missed out on the last two years!

Just something else to watch out for. No real advice about the period although I would just have it taken out. That would be crazy hard to live with!

  • I had the Mirena, just had it removed in September. I never had the issue, in fact my periods stopped right away. I did have a friend however who who had this problem on the Depo shot. She bled for a solid six months before it finally stopped, and took another year to regulate. She had to go off of that BC all together.
