Job

So a few weeks ago I discussed applying to starbucks bc I hate my current job. I got a call back today and im going for an interview this week. I'm not planning on announcing my pregnancy at the interview but how do I announce it after I'm hired with out looking like a bitch and causing drama/tension?

Re: Job

  • If I get hired I mean
  • Loading the player...
  • Wait until they offer you the position, then let them know as you are accepting it that you are pregnant.

  • I know its none of their business right now but I just feel like I'm being sneaky
  • You don't ever have to tell them! Let them figure it out on their own.
    Married 3/30/13- me, 36  DH, 38
    BFP #1 4/15/13  EDD: 12/25/13- triplets M/C 6/1/13
    BFP#2 9/14/13   DD-born on 5/13/14

  • Yes I just had my first day of work for a new job and I don't plan to tell them until after the new year mostly because if like them to get to know me and my work ethic before telling them especially since I am not protected under FMLA. If anyone asks I'll tell the the truth- I have a disease (lupus) that makes any pregnancy very risky so I didn't want to announce until we had reached certain milestones for my disease and pregnancy (also don't let them know about lupus either- no ones business but mine!) my only issue is, being a produce buyer, there may be heavy boxes mostly fruit coming in that I will need help lifting so this could force my hand earlier than if like but at Starbucks I imagine you'd be fine to wait it out.

  • I also went in for a job interview today and didn't tell them I was pregnant. If I do get the job I plan on telling them maybe 2 weeks after that I just found out ;) or wait till early January !

If they have a 6th grade education they will probably do the math and figure out that you probably didn't jut find out. Your choice but that seems risky to straight up lie about it. People will respect you more if you tell the truth and say you weren't ready to say anything.

  • I wouldn't tell them until I have a set schedual and wait like 3 months so they could see I am a good employee and being pregnant isn't going to interfer with my job. Or you can stay with your current job til you give birth
  • I guess I don't see why announcing a pregnancy would make you look like a bitch or cause drama. I'd just bring in some cute cookies or something one day and tell everyone when you're comfortable. Unless you'll be in a managerial role where it'd be difficult to replace you for awhile, I can't imagine it would upset anyone.
  • I think I'm just thinking they will think I won't work well and they will just have to replace me in may
  • I don't mean this to come across judge-y or like a Debbie downer but: I worked at Starbucks for years and cannot imagine doing it while pregnant. Not only are you on your feet for hours but you are literally running across the store, under an enormous amount of stress and deal with some of the most rude and impatient customers. You also do a lot of heavy lifting and in my honest opinion when I worked with pregnant women it was annoying to have to pick up their slack. (Of course I completely understood their situation, it was just a pain to deal with in the middle of a rush). That being said, if you have a really good crew that is supportive it will be easier but I just feel like as an ex-partner i should warn you!

  • Cbrust thank you so much for the warning!

Waiting 3 months wouldn't be an option in this case assuming she's due in May that would make her 4 months already ... Not often do people "hide" pregnancy very well at 7 months along

  • No I wouldn't be hiding it for long at all!

Also, no such thing as a set schedule at Starbucks!

I told a potential employer (the manager) in an interview that I was pregnant, and found out later from the owners that she didn't want to hire me because of it (illegal!) but they loved me during my second interview with them and didn't care I was pregnant (from the job stand point). So, even though they can't technically use it against you...it's possible they will and why risk it. I'd not mention it until after you have the job. They can't ask you anyway and you're not hiding anything, you're protecting your rights to equal employment.
  • I also work on the side as a waitress. You'll be ok on your feet etc. I told my job already bc the ice buckets and heavy boxes up high for stocking arnt an option for me to lift. I actually decided to tell them once when I tried to stick ice and ended up with a pulling pain in my lower uterus area. They were amazing! My GM told me if anyone has a problem with me not being able to do those few things then to tell them he said it's ok and if that doesn't work that to tell them to talk to him. They are also awesome with the extra pee break runs and quick minute grabs for food. You'll be fine especially if your in a staff position not management I wouldn't worry!

  • Thank you for all the advice! I just hope if I get hired, my coworkers will be nice!
