Food on the go

Background; DS is a BF baby eating 2 solid (purées) meals a day for a month now.

So Im just wondering about snacks when we're out and about on the weekends. Seems like he can handle about 3 hours without eating before he gets fussy for the boob. Can/should I be offering water in between that time if we're out running errands? (I don't pump) I know BM is still his main source of nutrition for now but I would like to wean him by the time he's one. He just turned 7 months. What about mum mums or those puff things?? Will those fill him up like BM does? Should I be bringing a container of a purée of some sort? What do you ladies do?

I feel like we're in a new ball game now that solids are being introduced.

Re: Food on the go

  • Do you nurse while out?  Typically around 1yr moms just start giving sippy cups/bottles of milk instead of breastmilk.  So, at 7 months there isn't anything you need to do to prepare them for weaning.

With my 9month old I BF on demand whether home or away.  She eats (BLW) when we eat at home or while out so we don't really do anything different when out of the house.  I do give a sippy straw cup 1-2x a day when at home just to keep her used to it for later on.  She loves it and can effectively suck from the straw on her own but she doesn't really take more than a few sips.   BF babies do not NEED water as the breastmilk quenches their thirst but you can give for fun and as a learning tool.  I would be weary of using water to make baby go longer between feeds though.

My friends will bring a jar of food for baby to eat while out if it is over a meal time.  I would think it is just way easier to nurse when out than to feed purees though!

  • I also bf but I only take a small thing of puffs or babyfood if its during a time which she normally gets food. I just nurse her otherwise. I will just nurse in the car or with a cover in public. She gets a sippy with water at home with dinner. She usually just plays with it.
I really wouldn't worry about weaning till closer to a year. I did that with DS. You might be surprised. They will usually wean themselves. I just started dropping a feeding a month before he turned 1. He was completely weaned by 13 months.

  • Yes, I nurse while we're out but sometimes it's not always easy, especially when he wants it RIGHT NOW
  • My LO is almost 8.5 months and eating solid food (BLW) 2-3 times a day. When we are out for an extended time I do not take any food, I just nurse her. I'll run errands on the weekend and we may be out anywhere from 3 to 5 hours - when it's time to eat I just BF in the car and she's good to go. Then we do food when we get home. She doesn't complain at all.

  • If dh is watching DD & I dont have time to pump then he will just give her formula. Have you tried that as an option?

  • DD is FF and has 3 puree meals a day.  If we're going to be out during one of her puree meals I bring along a Gerber pre-packaged puree (usually apple, sweet potatoes, squash or pear) and a spoon.  I make her purees for home myself.  The packaged ones are just easier for on the go.  I only buy them if the ingredients are the food and water.  Nothing else added.

Don't ever be caught without a baby spoon - I tried feeding DD from a regular spoon at a restaurant once and she couldn't get anything in her mouth!

  • DD is FF and eats 3 meals a day. Sometimes its whatever i'm eating, but if we're out and about and not eating lunch, i always have one of those self-serve packets of purees. she just sits in her stroller and sucks away as long as she's hungry (she's about 9 months).  If i'm at a restaurant or we're at home, she just eats some of my meal.

  • Jar of baby food and oatmeal and a packet of powder formula or in Tupperware with oatmeal. We usually bring a bottle with a sippy lid for the thick liquids.

  • Occasionally if we are out and I can't nurse (like we are driving in the car) I will give him. A pouch of fruits/veggies which can hold him off for a little while until I can nurse him... But then that is his lunch for the day. I don't give him extra solids, but I will adjust the times to fit into our schedule. I will then just nurse him when we get to wherever we're going.

  • What age are mum mums safe? I was under the impression they dissolved in your mouth so I tested one and it did not do that. Now I'm scared to give him one

  • I just nurse if we're out and about as I think it's easier, unless us adults are eating something, then LO demands some food too.

I try to plan my meal so that she can have something from my food. Get a salad with avocado and give that to her. Saturday she got some bites of corn on the cob because that's the snack we got and by gosh she wanted food too!!
