Alternative healthcare for LO?

LO has asthma and her doctor wants her to be on a once-a-day medication pretty much indefinitely. I'm getting a second opinion this week with a pulmonologist, but was thinking about also taking her to an alternative health therapist that my mom's seen. The woman is an acupuncturist and I guess she analyzes hair samples and makes diet and lifestyle recommendations based on that. I'm not against medication, but I hate the thought of giving LO drugs on a daily basis if it's not 100% necessary. Anyway, anyone have an experiences with alternative healthcare, either for themselves or LO? I've never done anything like this and don't know what to expect, or if it's a good idea. TIA!

Re: Alternative healthcare for LO?

  • I am big on trying at home methods first, with small things like colds and what not, but asthma is serious and I am not sure I would mess around with alternative methods when it comes to that. However sometimes you have to go with your gut. You are her biggest advocate.
IDD1 had cough variant asthma and she grew out of it. It is not as serious as asthma. She would have coughing fits that would make her gag when she laid down or ran around a lot. It really wasn't a breathing issue just violent coughing fits. We were given an inhaler with albuterol and we were suppose to give it to her before bedtime so she could sleep better and not cough so much. That stuff made her so crazy hyper it was a nightmare. I looked up some stuff about the benefits of honey, especially local honey and we started mixing some into warm milk at night. It worked a little bit so then we gave her straight spoonfuls and it worked magic. Now she was 2 so she was allowed to have honey.
I guess my point is I would go with my pedi's advice first and maybe try some alternative methods here and there and kinda of ease into them to see how well they would work. Does that make sense?

  • Yeah asthma isn't something to screw with, but I would definitely see the pulmonary doctor for a 2nd opinion, from what I've learned (working on an inpatient pediatric unit) true asthma can't be diagnosed until age 3. Until then it's called "reactive airway disease". But as PPs have said, much better to use a daily controlling med than to need rescue meds regularly. I am also not a fan of alternative medication especially for kids...they react differently to things than adults. Asthma really isn't something to mess with though it can definitely be fatal.

  • I know this sounds all dramatic but failure to provide medical care is considered neglect. I'd definitely see the pulmonologist, but if they recommend meds, I would 100% do it. For me, alternative medicine is in conjunction with, not in place of, western medicine.

  • I wouldn't try alternative medicine for asthma. Maybe for a rash or cough but people die of asthma attacks. Can you get some good hepa filtration going at home?
