D.S. is 17 months old not pointing, clapping and only says two consistant words- cat &yes. we called early intervention and he does qualify for services. Any one have experience like this before....please help very concerned =(
My son is just about that age and is completely non verbal (no mama or dada). He does point and clap though. He just recently was sent in for a hearing test and we're having an evaluation next week. This is through our school system and it is free. Kids catch up eventually, but for one reason or another some skills can be delayed. Just get him the help he needs and I'm sure he'll be just fine.
I don't have experience, but I wanted to say that I'm sorry you're going through this. The good news is you are doing the right things by going to early intervention ASAP so you can figure out what, if anything, is going on and then start working the problem if there is one.
My DD began speech therapy though EI at 17mos. She had no words but she did point and grunt and do some babbling. For the most part she very quiet. She did understand basic things I was saying to her and followed instructions I gave her. I have loved and been so grateful for therapy since she started. Her therapist has been excellent at answering my questions and helping to improve communication with my DD. She has recently been diagnosed with Childhood Apraxia of Speech which is a neurological disorder that makes it very difficult to produce certain sounds with accuracy. You are making the right decision getting your son into therapy. I hope you find a good therapist who will be working just as much with you as your son. I know people tell you not to worry and that's frustrating because of course you are but just remember to focus on helping him as much as you can. Good luck!!!!!
I think early intervention is the best thing you can do for your LO. If he qualifies, definitely take advantage of whatever you can, as soon as you can. Early intervention is key and can make a HUGE difference if it's just basic toddler delays and more so if its something much bigger.
I'm sorry I can't give you any reassurance, but you need to know that you're doing exactly what your child needs by having him evaluated now. Meeting with the therapists is definitely a step in the right direction and is really the only way to find out for sure. I
