Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

share your first haircut experience

DD is 20 months old, has always had tons of hair but I've never taken her to get a haircut.  From the time she was 7 months (told you she has a ton of hair) I always put her hair in pigtails with cute bows and I would always clip her long bangs back with a cute clippie.  I have trimmed the back myself but I've never really done a good job.  It always comes out uneven but again, you can't even tell when her hair is up in pigtails.

Lately she doesn't want to wear anything in her hair.  No pigtails, no bows, no headbands, not even a clip to bring it away from her face.  It makes me sad.  It's long enough that I can tuck it behind her ears but it still looks pretty messy most days and now that it's always down you can really tell how uneven it is in the back.  I tried to fix it myself the other night and I think I made it worse.

I was thinking of bringing her to one of those kiddy places.  There's one by my house that got mixed reviews.  Some people love it and some people did not like it.  I just don't want to pay a lot of money for them to chop it up and do a bad job since I doubt she'll stay still for it.

  • I would think that kiddie places would know how to clip hair on a wiggly toddler, so it has to potential to be a better cut than at home.  With most hair places, if you don't like what they've done, they should fix it for you.

  • We went to Pigtails and Crewcuts which is one of those kid's places. They have airplane/taxi/police car shaped chairs. He loved it! We've been twice.
  • I take both kids to the local kiddie place.  There is one girl there who doesn't really do a very good job but honestly I think that is more her than the kids...most of them do an awesome job and I can't believe how nice the haircuts look.  They have the car-shaped seats like pp mentioned and also give the kids a little box of toys to rifle through on their laps.  Both of my kids think it is great fun and get excited to go.

My DD refuses to wear anything in her hair, too, and her hair is like mine - lots and lots of really fine hair.  She wanted it long and no bangs but we compromised with just past the shoulders and long sideswept bangs.  She can swipe the bangs out of her face with one hand and it works out really well.

  • we debated this too when we were going to get ds' hair cut.  and ds is very wiggly and does not do well around strangers.  but the place we went to has spaceships and cars you and your lo can sit in so that was a great distraction.  he did great.  like pp said, these people are used to wiggly los!
  • I actually take both of my kids to where I get my haircut.  DD was 20mos old when she got her first real haircut.  She sat on my lap and had a sucker and was fine.  Her hair was down to her shoulders at that point and we just got it trimmed up and evened out.  I took DS at 14mos and he did the same.
  • I just took DD to where I get my hair cut.  My husband came along and she sat in his lap while my stylist cut her hair.  DD was 14 months at the time and she did really well.  Her second cut was at a kiddie place just because I needed to get her in somewhere and my stylist was booked.  They had small tv's with built in dvd players at each station.  She was able to watch a video while they cut her hair.  Again, she did fine.  I suggest having two people going.  One distracts, if needed, while the other holds the child.  It makes it easier.
