When can I stop waking LO every 3 hours to feed?

Obviously this is a good question for the pediatrician, but I was wondering what advice people received as far as allowing LO to sleep longer than 3 hours without waking them to eat. I believe the advice for full term babies is when they have regained their birthweight and BF is well established, you can allow them to sleep and simply feed on demand. Our LO is now over 1 month old, but only 38 weeks adjusted. He is gaining weight as he should. He is good at waking up on his own when he is hungry, but I am still careful to set my alarm so he does not go longer than 3 hours. When do you think I can stop doing this, and get more than 3 hours of sleep at a time?

  • Like you said, this is a question for your pediatrician. They're the only ones that can give you accurate advice since they are aware of all the medical history. FWIW we stopped waking at around their due date when they were 2.5 months old.

We came home from NICU at about 39 weeks and she woke up every 3-4hrs on her own to eat (NICU schedule). We gradually moved to 5, then 6hrs between feedings and she'd wake up on her own, but it wasn't until probably 41ish weeks?? Dr said as long as she's gaining weight it isn't a big deal to let her sleep.
  • Definitely check with pedi. If my memory is correct, it has a lot to do with how well baby is gaining weight but also the baby's ability to maintain blood sugar.  Our pedi said we could stop waking to eat when Anna hit 8 lbs because she was eating and gaining at a good rate.

I agree with PP. I wouldn't make that call unless directed by your pedi. They need to eat often for brain development.

Our pedi told us we could let him sleep at our 2 month checkup. Our LO was gaining well at that point. But he rarely goes more than 3 hours during the day, even now at 5 months.

  • I think we stopped around the time she was 5 weeks adjusted, but it was off the recommendation of our Pediatrician. She's sleeping more at night, but still eats 3-4 hours during the day.
