Talk to me about your big baby

As came up in the working mom check in, I have a very large baby. He was born 10#2oz, and remains in the 97-99%tile. For BTDT (or current) moms of bigger babies, what kind of differences were there between your child and others developmentally?

Specifically, did they remain in that %tile into grade shool? Did they develop at the same rate as others their age? Anyhing else you can think of?

I realize this seems silly, but I feel like a lot of things are just different for us than for some other moms, even already.

Re: Talk to me about your big baby

  • My first was born 10lbs1/2oz and he's now 6 and weighs about 53lbs. He's a string bean but he's tall which is why he weighs that much. Compared to his classmates, he's probably about average. There are kids bigger and taller and some shorter and smaller.

When he was a baby he was rolling one way by 3 mos, rolling the other way by 5 mos, crawling by 7 months and walking by 9. I didn't notice any differences in him vs other babies.

Piper was born 10lbs2oz. Same as your LO! She's being weighed today but it think she's around 15lbs. So far I've noticed no diff between her and smaller babies. She sleeps well tho. May have something to do with her weight? But I don't really know....hth!

  • My first was 9 lbs 1 oz. he was pretty chunky for his first year and up in the 90th percentile. He has leveled out now. At 9 he is close to 80lbs and I am waiting on his growth spurts because he is a bit shorter but his dad is 6'4 and he is projected to be around 6'1. But he's solid, not thin at all. Developmentally I noticed no difference.

  • My daughter was born small (6 lbs 11 oz), but quickly chunked up. She has remained in the 90-95%ile since a few months old, for height and weight. She's now 4 years old, 50 lbs, and a little over 4 feet tall. Developmentally she's either hit things a little early (like walking at 7 months old), or right on time.

  • OK, this is making me feel a little better. Joel is 3 months tomorrow, and already nearly 19 pounds. He's not fat, but he is solid. I'm just concerned he is growing entirely too fast. The ped says that they expect him to stay in that range, but for now it means feeding him a LOT. He's eating 36-40oz a day minimum....

  • I've had 2 large babies and my oldest has remained large.

The only difference in their development from others his age is they both wear larger clothes....

  • My good friend had her son three months before DD1. The kids were on opposite ends of the growth charts (DD1 was like 5% for a long time--but always very healthy). By the time they were walking, he very quickly leaned out. Milestones were back and forth between the two. The only major difference I recall was DD was verbal way earlier but that really had I suspect almost nothing to do with size. I don't think size at this age means really anything as long as healthy.

  • Dd was 10 lb 10 oz. I think I had the biggest babe. She will be 4 months on the 12th. She measured 25 inches today (she was 21.5 at birth) and 16 lbs according to my scale. She has stayed 90 percent for most all measurements. My siblings and I were all big babies but skinny kids. I think I was three when I really started thinning out.

  • My boy was 8.11 at birth and 20.5".

At 9 weeks he was 14.5 and 24"

Now, according to my he measurements, he is 26" and 17 lbs at 14w.

Like PP said, he's not necessarily fat, he's just so solid! The only part of his body that is noticeably chunky are his thighs. He wears 3-6 mo clothes and size 2 diapers. So I don't feel like he LOOKS that large, but he's a tank. He is FF now and eats 30 oz a day at the most.

He did start sitting up last week (with hands out in front) and rolled over at three weeks and then again consistently at 12w.

  • Not a BTDT thing but I was born at 10 pounds 2 oz at 39 weeks. I was a huge baby! And by the time I started t-ball at 4 I was the smallest kid on the team. I was always the littest girl in my class. And was a skinny mini until puberty. But I am a girl! My baby was born 8.4. He's 18 weeks and definitely well over 16 pounds at this point (he gets weighed Wednesday) I am not concerned at all for his fatness or giantness. I EP. He eats 30-40oz a day, doesn't ever spit up. Can almost sit up unassisted. I agree with PP's once they're mobile they drop some of the baby chunck too!

My oldest started small - 6lbs at 37w1d, but chunked up quickly. He gained a pound a week for over two months. He was 13lbs by 2 months. Now, at 3.5yo, he's 46lbs. He's a solid kid, no two ways about that. He's in a 5T shirt and 4T pants. Long torso and short legs, like his daddy, haha.

I'm glad you posted about this. I haven't been on here in a while but after measuring my dd yesterday, I wanted to see what other babies around her age are looking in comparison. My dd was 8lbs and 20.5 inches at birth. She was three months last Thursday. She's been eating very frequently and a lot since then so I wanted to see how big she was. She's 15.6 lbs and 26 inches! My husband is 6'6" and I'm 5'9" so I knew she'd be bigger but she doesn't fit in three month clothes anymore! Like you, it made me think about the future and how she would compare to her peers. Glad I'm not the only one with a large little!
