How often do you give Tylenol or Motrin?

Re: How often do you give Tylenol or Motrin?

  • The pedi told us to go ahead a give daily if teething is especially hard, until the tooth/teeth come in. I try to limit it to bed time. I have noticed that within about 24 hours of one breaking through it doesn't help.

  • With 3 kids, I have gave it at most 2 times for teething. And it was motrin since that has an anti-inflammatory.  Other than that we have Inspired by Finn teething necklaces.  I know they work because with my 2nd daughter we forgot once to put it back on after a bath and the next morning she was a bear and it was later in the day we realized it wasn't on, we put it back on and a few hours later she was calmed.  We've never had them wake up in the middle of the night not even with molars.  I generally just give them rubber spatulas to walk around and chew.

Also, not sure if you were only asking about meds for teething or in general but I don't give motrin/tylenol for fevers either.  Any fever under 102.4 an under I just keep them comfortable.  Fevers are good, its the bodies way of burning the infection.
  • When she gets super crazy due to a tooth coming in, we typically give her Motrin once during the day and then before bedtime for a two or three days until the tooth pops through. I always try teething tablets first though. Normally during the day it will take the edge off and she isn't so grumpy. At night it doesn't seem to help.

The other night she kept waking every 30-45 min and it was horrible. It was like the 10th wake up and DH asked if I had given her Motrin at all and I said no because I didn't think she was teething. She had been fine all day. He gave her some and she was out for the rest of the night. Woke up in the morning and her tooth had pushed through. Poor kiddo!

This. I don't give it for no reason, but I sure don't feel bad giving it to her when she is obviously in pain. Moderation is the key I think, like anything else.
  • Not too often. Unless Cade's teething is really bad we don't give him any Tylenol or Motrin. He is getting some serious teeth in right now and we've had to double up his amber necklaces and we do Hylands ever so often, but we've only given him 1 dose of Motrin recently and that was last ngith since he's getting his top teeth in finally. The amber necklaces have helped a ton though. When his teething gets really bad we stick 1 more necklace on. All his drooling goes away within an hour and he rarely seems to be in discomfort.

We have been having LO wake up with inconsolable crying a few times this past week - we are back to doing gas drops & a Hyland teething tablet at bed time & that seems to prevent the middle if the night screaming. She had tooth #3 break through yesterday & has been eating like she has a hollow leg so am guessing there is a growth spurt being fueled as well.

Tried giving her grape flavored Tylenol last month - she is now refusing it (can't blame her) so we have only given it maybe 4 times in her year on the outside.

  • I gave it every day for 3 days when he cut all four of his so far only teeth between 9 and 10 months.  Haven't given any more yet, but I am starting to think he might need it soon for some new teeth...
