Night terrors can suck it

Ugh.

DD2 suddenly started having night terrors about a week ago. Well, I call them night terrors, but I'm not even sure that's what they are. She fights bedtime like mad, cries, screams "no sleep" and just acts generally panicked. We've had her bed share with DD1, which seems to help, but it's nowhere near perfect. We deal with 2 - 3 wakeups a night (because DD1 is "too far" or is hogging the covers or lord knows what) and she is still fighting bedtime (though not as bad).

There just isn't enough wine - and coffee - in the world

Re: Night terrors can suck it

  • Oh no.  I'm so sorry.  DD1 had these a while back - I want to say around 12-16 months - and it was really upsetting for everyone.  We assumed night terrors, she was uncontrollably upset in the night, but for apparent reason that we ever figured out.  Hopefully it's a short phase and doesn't last too long for you and her!

  • Hank had them around this age, so I wonder if this is a developmental thing. Jay was really compassionate toward him, and wanted to handle this in the gentlest way he could. Jay and Hank bed shared on a queen sized air mattress for months. Then, we transitioned Hank into his bed. Then, Jay started leaving him in his room after he'd drifted off to sleep. Finally, we started an all new bedtime routine. He sleeps just great now with hardly a MOTN waking.
I guess my response is that there likely isn't a quick fix for this. I'm sorry she is going through this. Sorry you guys are missing out on sleep, too.

  • Thanks ladies. I just don't know what to do. I know there's no quick fix, but I still wish there was. Between her and Baby Boy, I'm up about 5 times a night these days. I don't know how much longer I can go like this (and DH does get up a few times a night, too, even though he has to go to work in the morning).

The girls already have a night light, but tonight I tried leaving an actual lamp on. We'll see if that helps... *sigh*

  • Have you considered putting a sleeping bag in your room on the floor? That's what worked for Liam.

My problem is that if I do that, DD1 will want in on it, too. Plus knowing DD2, if she gets into my room, there's no way she will be happy sleeping on the floor.
    *sigh*
I ended up crawling into bed with the girls at 1AM as both of them were screaming at the top of their lungs and I just couldn't take it anymore.

  • Lily was doing this for a while. Originally we just turned the closet light on and shut the door so she would have the light from just around the cracks. I accidentally left the door slightly open one night and found her the next morning with her blanket, monkey and pillow INSIDE the closet. So I tried it witht he door open and it has been great since then. FX it stays that way! We just found this week that apparently the night light just wasn't bright enough for her. we now leave the closet light on and the door open about a foot. If she does wake up she goes right back to sleep now.
  • We now leave a lamp on, on top of the night light. Still not going so well, though. I have been able to put her to bed more easily these past few days, but we are still dealing with multiple wake ups...
    This, too, shall pass...
