The 50/50 thread made me curious, who handles the finances in your family?

Re: Who's the CFO in your family?

  • I dubbed myself the CFO of our family (my parents love that name), I take care of everything money related.

I spend the money, H makes sure I don't spend it all :)

I totally use Mint.com to spy on DH's spending.
Nice! H has got me set up with the app Left to Spend so I don't eat $20 lunches everyday :)

  • I am honestly better with money and remember everything but DH thinks its a "man's job" to pay the bills. That was a struggle at the beginning of our marriage. I am in charge of our main savings account, I'm way better at saving. So I put 50/50.

  • We split it. He pays the mortgage on the house we live in, his student loan, his car insurance, and a couple of other bills. I pay the mortgage on where I used to live (and still own), my car insurance, and the utilities. We both pay for daycare.
  • Lol @subliminalrabbit! I did the same thing when we were deciding whether or not to buy our new house. I couldn't even force him to look. He kept saying budgets were stupid and pointless!

  • Me.  Definitely me.  It's all me.  I had a pretty major flip out about money three weeks ago.  DH has spent the past three days trying to buy a PS4 (for himself).  Clearly he did not get the message that we don't have enough income considering I produce the only income.  Fun frickin times.
  • DH is. We are both good wih money though. I didn't grow up with any so I'm pretty cheap and conservative with my spending, and DH's family has a lot of money so he's great with investments, maxing out retirement funds each year, paying the bills, etc. Sadly we will have no financial worries in 20+ years due to some known inheritances but no one likes to think that way.

Homeowners:  the best thing we did was roll my student loans into our mortgage when we refinanced our house a couple years ago.  It only raised our payment $50 a month!

  • We have joint and separate accounts. We aren't horrible with money but we could be better. This is more 50/50.

  • Totally me. Even though he hates what a pain in the ass I am, he knows we wouldn't have our house or probably either kid without my hard ass tendencies lol

  • I do. I'm more of the breadwinner and better at keeping up with money, bills, savings. If I left it to dh, we'd be broke and never get to enjoy anything or go anywhere. We both have separate checking accounts that we don't hav e access to but also have a joint one as well. It works for us and keeps us hapoy and not fighting.

  • @daffy2k, I then had to itemize, categorize, and average three months' worth of credit and debit card charges to PROVE that my estimates were accurate, and that we were spending a ridiculous amount of $ on iTunes.  Well, that HE was spending a ridiculous amount of $ on iTunes.  ;)
I completely understand! DH doesn't ever seem to recognize when he spends outrageous amounts of money, but he's the first one to jump all over me if I go on a bit of a spending spree. Luckily we live way under what our budget "could" be, but I like to have that ammo (his spending) ready for when he's feeling all stingy about me buying stuff for Madeline, our house or christmas presents. Such a Scrooge when he thinks his precious bank account might dwindle in the slightest.

Right there with you.  Although I went in on an Xbox One with the ILs for DH's birthday.  But he wants a PS4 too, and I also produce pretty much the only income.

This seems to have become a Sunday B*tchfest, ha!
    @subliminalrabbit - I'd say it's worthy of a mini-b*tchfest.
    ;)

  • I give DH a spending money allotment once a month. I take care of everything else. He doesn't remember to take the checkbook to daycare on Fridays without a reminder. He never checks the balance either; he just writes the check assuming I have everything covered.
  • Hubby does. I'm the breadwinner now but he's the finance guy. We each have separate "allowances" that we can spend however we want and we manage separately.

  • When I was working I took care of paying all the bills. After baby DH took over and now handles paying all the bills, and tells me how much I can spend on groceries etc... He checks our bank account every single day. I don't look because it makes me want to cry. We iz poor.

  • @sctiger- that is the same with us. My H takes care of the whole thing- all I know is that we are good. I like it that way.

  • Me for sure. He has no clue and has to ask me if we have money in the account to pay his one credit card once a month. I have my MBA though and am really neurotic about finances and he is more of a dreamer so we make a good complement! If we both worried about money as much as I did it would be a bad scene.

  • @ShannonR7 you are so right. DH has a folder that contains all of our accounts, passwords, etc that's kept in his parents safe just in case. It's a sad reality that everyone should address.

  • Hubs makes the money, I pay the bills. He actually has no idea what the balance of our bank account is.
    Exactly this.
  • After 8 years of marriage, we still have separate accounts. We have a joint account that we both fund equally every month and I pay the joint bills from that account.
We have never ever fought about money because I'm free to do whatever I want with my money and he is the same.
  • We still have our money completely separate and until DD was born, we split everything 50/50. That's not really possible anymore with the addition of daycare and other baby related expenses since DH now makes quite a bit more money than I do. We are in the process of merging our finances and I will be in charge of everything from that point on.

This is us exactly. Except we've been married 6 years :)  We have never fought about money.  I might have side-eyed some of his purchases but he made them with his own money.
  • Hubs makes twice as much as me. I am the CFO in the sense that I take care of paying the bills, but I'm also the spender. Oops. I also pack his lunch for him, so he doesn't spend money going out to eat. This is really only so I can have a little more play money. H has no clue what the balance is.
  • I handle the budget and day to day spending. DH handles our retirement accounts, savings and investments. I really should learn more about that stuff but I just don't care. We have a financial planner and an estate lawyer so in the event of DH dying I have resources to help me sort it all out.

  • DH pays all the monthly bills and I take care of all the household expenses. Up until LO we also split the rent. We really need to just combine everything though.
