Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Bedtime routine out the window

For quite a few months now, our bedtime routine has worked great. We bathe then bottle then bed. Our LO is a spitter so in order for her to not spit up the entire bottle, we needed her to fall asleep while drinking. If she wasn't completely passed out, she'd roll on to her belly and spit it all up - leaving us to have a waken baby with wet sheets. The last 4 nights she is still awake and we walk her around and hope she falls asleep. Now we put her in the crib and she wakes up 2 mins later. Anyone have any suggestions on a new routine?

Re: Bedtime routine out the window

  • I'd change the order, feed her, burp her then bath and bed.

  • Our daughter would also "urp" quite a bit--we've gotten into the routine of bottle, burp/walk, bath, book and then bed. Having her up a bit longer helped things to settle in her tummy and we could wash her down if we needed to. It's also helped her to learn to go to sleep without the bottle. Husband and I have really struggled with helping our DD fall asleep on her own--we had about 2 weeks of baby waking up every 2 hours; getting into the routine I mentioned and letting her cry a bit has made a huge difference--tough for us, but we are all sleeping better. Goodluck! There is no perfect answer for everybody, you will find something that works :)

This won't be easy but this is probably what you need to do. This means putting baby to bed deliberately awake. You will likely have to find a form of sleep training you are comfortable with. Even if you don't change the routine, she's still awake after the bottle so you will need to find a way to get her to fall asleep on her own. You can help her of course but best to help her learn how to do it now rather than later :) Good luck!

  • From my experience, a new skill/milestone emerges when sleep gets dustrupted. Have you tried making bedtime earlier or later? This will pass eventually
