Babies: 6 - 9 Months

7 month old... Not crawling

My son will be 7months tomorrow... He HATES and I mean HATES being on his belly... We have done tummy time every day, several times a day since he was about 4 weeks but always hated it. He can sit up by himself and loves standing with help. But the moment he is on his belly he freaks out... Is it terrible if he doesn't crawl?? Is he behind?

  • My son is a little over 8 months and doesn't sit up on his own yet..I mean, he can sit there by himself but doesn't pull himself to sitting, and is just figuring out how to use his knees to push himself forward, though he hasn't coordinated arms and knees together yet to crawl. I'm expecting it in the next week or so.
I'm really trying not to compare progress with other babies. Everyone says each baby is different and until he's at an age where I know he's falling behind I'm not going to worry about his overall development.
He really hated tummy time and then all of a sudden he preferred it. I think it flips like a switch. Don't worry just yet.
  • Mine has loved tummy time since she started rolling. She's been trying to crawl for the past couple of weeks and the past two days I've seen her really start trying to work with her knees (she had already been on them trying to propel forward). I think it also goes in line with how fast your LO is developing other skills. Mine was rolling at 4 mo.

  • Just think about this - he won't be 2 yrs old and not crawling, right? I don't think it's a cause for concern. Some babies just don't want to do certain things and some surprise you by just doing it out of the blue. I didn't know crawling was something babies did around 8-9 months. DS could get from A to B at four months and was crawling with hands and knees by 6 months so I guess he was on the early side. Your guy may skip crawling & go straight to walking!
  • My son hated crawling but was walking by 11 months. DD, 6 months, used to love tummy time but recently started hating it but she loves to sit up & stand with help. She also loves her walker. She's barely scooting around in it.
My cousins son just started crawling at 9 months. Every baby is different but not comparing is best. I learned that with DS.

  • My daughter just turned 9 months and isn't crawling, pulling up or even interested in those things. I'm not overly concerned though... She seems to be focusing on learning other stuff and it's WAY easier to go to the bathroom knowing I can put her down and she'll still be there when I get back!
  • No worries.  Crawling isn't even an official milestone.  Many babies skip it all together, some will just up and walk one day others bum crawl or roll.  It's wayyyyyy too early to worry at 7months!

Be thankful baby is not mobile through the holiday season!  My 9 month old is eyeing up the Christmas tree as we speak.  We are hoping we make it through until January without her becoming mobile, but it's looking doubtful!

  • Some kiddos never crawl .He may just started pulling himself up (since he hates tummy time) and then pick his little feet up and walk. TOTALLY normal.

  • My daughter is 7 months and does not crawl yet. Doesnt seem to be to interested in it either. She does sit up and loves to stand with help but whenever we put her on her belly she roll to her back right away.

    New Mommy!!!

  • What would make you think he is behind because he isn't crawling yet? Is there an age when they are SUPPOSED to be crawling?? They do it when they can and want to..my DD is 8 months and doesn't crawl..no reason to worry!

  • My sister rubs it in my face that her son was crawling at 6 months... I think it's just made me paranoid... Thanks all!
  • My son is 9 1/2 months and still isn't crawling. He so hates being on his tummy. And he hasn't shown any interest in crawling what so ever. Our pedi said it's normal and not to worry. He does seem very interested in walking though, so that's a plus! Good luck and try not to worry!
  • I think some boys don't do the "milestones" as fast as some baby girls do. My daughter is 9.5 months old and her little friend at daycare, he just turned 1 yrs old and he just started crawling on his hands and knees.
My daughter started crawling at 7 months, standing at 8 months and now at 9.5 months she can walk around the table by holding on. She is testing her skills by trying to stand on her own. I miss her being a baby and being able to just cuddle her. Now she wants to be free.
  • my son is now 8 months and he is starting to crawl good now and he hated tummy time!!!! but don't worry boys are slower at picking thing up then girls are... idk why

  • Nope.  My other two were late crawlers too.  My oldest was walking then learned to crawl a month later, my 2nd child was delayed in gross motor skills and didn't crawl until 12 mo.  My youngest is 7.5 months and not even sitting more than a few seconds on her own.  I'm not worried.  They all get there at some point.

Out of 3 kids I've had one crawl at 6 1/2 months, one at 9 1/2 months, and one at 5 1/2 months.

  • DD2 never crawled. She just got up and walked around 9 months. She's almost 3 and she still looks super awkward crawling (like when she's pretending to be a baby) because she never had the skill.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • 7 months is super early for crawling. I think nine months is more typical. Also, some babies never really crawl. The find other ways to get around or go straight to walking. Keep giving baby plenty of floor time, but don't worry if he isn't crawling!

    All of this.
  • My son was the same way! He hated being on his tummy, so I never put him on it. He just turned 7 months and started crawling a week later. I don't think your baby is delayed, babies just do what they want when they want. He might be one of those babies that doesn't crawl and just starts walking! I wouldn't worry if I were you
  • No way! Don't feel bad about it.  That's totally okay.  Maybe you can work on his walking and skip a step!
