Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

2T vs. 24 mos

I've noticed that 2T and 24 mos sizing seem to overlap in sizing with certain brands - meaning you can be both within the weight category for both 24 mos and 2T.  I feel like I've read or heard somewhere that, in general, one size tends to be wider and one size tends to be longer.  Has anyone else heard that/found that to be the case?  DS is right on the cusp of 2Ts and I find that when I do buy that size thinking they'll be a little big now but will last longer, they actually end up being way too big and the 24 mos would probably end up lasting him much longer than I would expect based on the sizing labels. It's so frusrating.  Can anyone help me make sense of this! :)

I'm having the same problems. DS is 97% height and 60% weight and made the move out of 18 months a few weeks ago. I take a chance with shirts and buy 2T. I figure even if they are big right now, at least they'll last the entire season. I've learned my lesson with pants and I only buy adjustable waist pants.
Oh yeah - pants. Don't even get me started on those.  Carters alone has some 18 months that fit him perfectly with room to grow and other 18 months that he is swimming in. And, he has some 12-18 mos Gap jeans that I tried on him just to make sure they didn't fit anymore and, low and behold, they are just as big as they were last spring.  Glad I didn't pack those away without checking. I already miss summer - when I did not care if his shorts end up looking like capris because they were too long!

I pretty much have to take DS to the store and try things on. I don't buy anything online anymore because of this problem.

DS is 32 pounds and 34 inches tall at 19 months. He mainly wears 2T in shirts but it varies for pants and PJ's. I have only found one off brand of pants that fit him really well and he wears an 18 month in them. Besides jammies, he doesn't wear anything Carter's anymore.

So you can, for real, get him to try things on? Getting clothes on DS in the morning for daycare is hard enough in our house (hence, yesterday, pants I put on him for the first time ended up being way too big but I said, screw it, you're wearing them anyway!)  :)  But, I do agree with you on buying online.  Everytime I do it (like I just did, which generated this post) I end up taking half the stuff back.  I'd love to get it right the first time just once!

From what I gather.  24 months is supposed to be a little wider and shorter for shirts and pants are supposed to have more diaper room.  2Ts are supposed to be thinner in width and longer in torso for shirts and have a smaller butt area in pants.  So most 2 year olds should be in theory ditching diapers and slimming down.  I have not found this at all and actually compare the sizes a lot and by brands.  My DD has a super long torso so we tend to wear bigger size shirts to cover our belly but then the sleeves need to be rolled up and as we have short arms we also have short legs and don't wear a diaper anymore so we wear smaller pants to accommodate her tiny butt.

Okay - so it is as complicated as I thought!  But, thank you for the clarificaton on the wider vs longer.  Trial and error continues!  :)

  • 24 months - wider, more room to accomdate a diaper
2T - longer, less room to accomdate a diaper.

It really just depends on the brand but I think 2T is always bigger.

  • To really mess with you, there are some stores like Crazy 8, for example, that do 18-24 months, 2 year and 2T. I asked the clerk what the difference was between 2y and 2T and the answer I got was "Well, I think one runs a little different." Thanks. That was very helpful.

It seriously all depends on the store and, even then, sometimes the individual pieces. My son is 19 months old, just over 37 inches tall and 30 pounds. I had to buy him a 3T Columbia winter jacket but he drowns in some of the 2T t-shirts from Gymboree-- but only some. Others from the same store fit, just different styles, fit much better. Like PP said, pants are a crap shoot. Most 2T fit fine with maybe just a flip at the cuff but he has a couple of 18-24 month pants that still fit just fine, too. Even though he isn't a shrimp at 30 pounds, he's so tall that he's definitely on the thinner side so I've grown to really love the adjustable waist pants.

  • I'm lazy and just buy stuff ahead of time and put it in a marked drawer then I have her try it on from time to time to see if they fit. We basically have "too small" box, her regular clothes, and "too big" box. I constantly am rotating & trying on things. She's a peanut though so I never really have the issue of stuff being too tight and I'm ok with her growing into it.

  • Lo is on the cusp too so I've been getting 2t so he can grow into them. Bought some osh kosh overalls...way too big I rolled the pants a few times and they were baggy. Ugh. At least there was cute flannel on the legs. I do t want to buy 18 months and in a month they're already riding up.

  • I have no idea the difference because every store is so different - my 19 month old daughter is 24lbs, 33.5 inches and fits in 18 month size jeans from Target perfectly, 24 month size pants from Carters but they have to be rolled up, and Old Navy is a joke - she is in a 2T in their "skinny" style jeans/khakis and they JUST fit.  If she grows a half inch, they'll be too short.  But she is fine in an 18-24 ,month fleece pant/legging from there.  Shirts I have been doing mainly a 2T because a lot shrink a bit when they are washed/dried.  Especially Carters I've noticed. So, like another poster said, I just have to bring her with and make her try stuff on.  It isn't fun, but saves me from doing a million returns if I buy online :-(

  • My son's head is so huge I have to buy 3T just to get it over his noggin. He is still in an 18 month pant...

  • 24 months is meant to fit at 24 months.. 2T is meant to fit the entire year they are two. Toddlers stop growing as quickly once they turn two.

We have to cut the neck of DS sweatshirts because they don't fit over his head! lol
Hmm...I'll probably have to start doing that.  We stretch the crap out of DS's shirts to get them over his head.  He had to have an cranial ultrasound because pedi was worried about the size of his head lol.  (it was normal)
  • Basically, what others said... 24 months is wider/shorter and 2T is leaner/longer. It really depends on your kid's build. DS is small and lean. He pretty much skipped 24 months. He wore 12-18 months bottoms for a really long time (probably until he was 2 1/2) and then went right to 2T. He potty trained right at 2 so the 24 months stuff was just too big in the waist. He wore 2T shirts earlier right when he turned 2.
