When is it ok to use bumpers?

I know when bumpers are supposed to be a no-no for infants, but at what point are they ok to use?  I ask b/c this lil guy moves a lot in his sleep and more than once I've found him with a foot out between the rails of the crib.  I don't want him to hurt himself trying to flail around to get it out, it's always the same side, so would it be ok to just put a breathable bumper on the one side of the crib?  Just curious about others thoughts on this. I put a picture that shows how I tend to find him, he is an expert at flipping himself around in there!

Re: When is it ok to use bumpers?

  • I thought if they could roll themselves away. Then it was safe, but I could be wrong too.

  • We used to swaddle him but he manages to wiggle his arms out of that as well, he's a squirmy lil guy!  I don't really want to use bumpers since I know they are dangerous but I am not sure what to do with him moving around so much already!  Maybe I could try a sleep sack or something other than the sleeper onesies he sleeps in now, something that keeps his legs together I guess could help, I hadn't really thought about changing what he sleeps in but that would be the easiest route to try!

  • We have a breathable bumper in the crib. DD isn't in the crib yet, but we used it for DS too. It's collapsible so lo can't use it to stand on the get out of the crib.

  • Don't they make mesh "bumpers"? They're similar to the sides of the PnP. Also, I saw in a magazine that there's these sleeves that wrap around each slat of the crib to act as bumpers. Wouldn't those be safer options?

  • I have a mesh one, and I think they are supposed to be ok once they can roll on their own.

  • We have the breathable mesh bumpers and we have them halfway down the mattress.
  • @Amjoy25 that is actually a really helpful article, especially since it mentions that cribs are made know so that it is hard for infants to hurt themselves even if they get a leg stuck.

Thanks ladies, I didn't think that there was an ok time for bumpers anymore, but I wasn't sure!  I think tomorrow I'll look into getting him a sleep sack to see if that helps with him moving around so much!
