First flight with baby

I'm taking my first flight with baby next weekend. He will be 13 weeks then. I called airtran and they said I did not need his birth certificate. Anyone travel lately and verify this? I'm sure they are right but just want to see what other peoples experiences were. It any tips for flying with LO are greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Re: First flight with baby

  • I haven't flown w lo, but advice i hear repeatedly is to nurse during takeoff and landing to keep lo's ears from popping. and see if your airports have an express lines for families.

  • Southwest said a copy of birth certificate or a copy of their immunization records. Three flights and I have yet to be asked for anything at the airport.

  • I flew with DD at 5 months and they asked for it. I will be flying in a few weeks with DS and I do have it just in case. I would call the airline so you don't have any issues when you get there.
  • I've flown 4 times with LO and have been asked for her birth certificate or proof of age once. Good to carry just in case.

  • I'd say take it in case. The best advice that I didn't think of was to bring plastc bags in case LO messes up their clothes. Both going and coming home I got pee all over her outfit. So glad we had a bag so I didn't have to throw it out.

I always brought a copy of DD's birth certificate just in case.. They didn't really ask for it until she was closer to 2, when they needed to verify that she was still free.

Other advice, pacifier, bottle, or nurse during take off and landing. Change their diaper as close to getting on the plane as possible so that (depending on the length of the flight) you hopefully won't have to change it on the plane. Bring change of clothes for you as well as the baby.. And hopefully the baby sleeps the whole time!

Also if you can wear the baby a friend of mine said they actually don't make you take them off through security.. Juggling the stroller, car seat, diaper bag, carry on's, baby, etc.. Through security is the worst part of the flying experience IMO. I will definitely be trying the baby wearing with the baby this time, especially with having 2.
